Description
Melvin Weins belongs to the Weins branch of the prestigious Trambelio family within the Mage's Association. Plagued by a chronic, debilitating illness that causes frequent blood vomiting, he was forced into early retirement from competitive magecraft despite possessing talent sufficient for the Brand rank. This illness led to abandonment by his peers, including his father. His fortunes changed with the discovery of his unique aptitude: manipulating the Magic Circuits and Magic Crests of others. This rare ability restored his status, drawing back those who had deserted him. Throughout this period, his mother, acknowledged as powerful even by McDonell Trambellio Elrod, remained his steadfast supporter. Melvin studied under Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald during the 1990s as part of the El-Melloi Classroom.
His expertise is Tuning Magic Crests. As a Tuner, he uses specialized Renaissance-era Mystic Code tools crafted by his mother to synchronize the wavelengths between a Crest and its host, enhancing the Crest's effectiveness. This precision work is considered irreplaceable in the modern age. His frail constitution requires magical hematopoietic medicine for daily survival.
Melvin's relationship with Waver Velvet drives many of his actions. He funded Waver's trip to Japan for the Fourth Holy Grail War in exchange for an "interesting story." Six months post-war, the mage Barzan tricked him into financing an excavation in Iraq, targeting Iskandar's tomb without Melvin's knowledge. Imprisoned alongside the captured Waver, Melvin confirmed Kayneth's death. Their escape involved Waver distracting Barzan while Melvin disrupted the site's leylines, causing an explosion that released evil spirits and killed Barzan's group. Despite Waver having no collateral, Melvin later financed his acquisition of the El-Melloi classroom, accepting Waver's friendship as repayment. He became the official Tuner for the restored El-Melloi Magic Crest, taking Waver's own Crest as collateral. Melvin consistently uses Waver's birth name instead of his title, Lord El-Melloi II, to acknowledge Waver's identity beyond his role and prevent loneliness.
He actively seeks excitement, frequently inserting himself into Waver's dangerous investigations. Learning of Waver's invitation to the Rail Zeppelin, he procured his own invitation and chartered a helicopter to intercept the train. After crashing into a Child of Einnashe forest, he boarded and aided in reactivating its leyline by empowering the Magic Circuits of Gray and Yvette L. Lehrman. He later facilitated a political meeting between Waver and Inorai Valualeta Atroholm of the Democratic Faction concerning the Grand Roll incident, deliberately withholding that McDonell Trambellio Elrod would also attend—an act he framed as a "betrayal" to navigate factional tensions.
In events around 2006, he participated in underground magus auctions. When Waver sought funding to enter Fem's Casa, Melvin had already financed the antagonist Ziz's entry fee. Serving briefly as Ziz's apprentice from the Wandering Sea, he used an Age of Gods spell to bury Ziz at sea after the latter was killed by an Origin Bullet. His health noticeably deteriorated during this time.
