Description
Takenaka Hanbei serves as a strategist for the Oda clan. Originally aligned with Saitō Dōsan in Mino Province, she joined the Oda forces after Saitō Yoshitatsu's rebellion against his father. Her tactical brilliance is widely recognized and feared by rivals like Niwa Nagahide and Akechi Mitsuhide, having consistently outmaneuvered opponents in ways that sparked rumors of supernatural foresight. Her decision to join Oda Nobunaga followed her rescue by Sagara Yoshiharu, Akechi Mitsuhide, Maeda Toshiie (Inuchiyo), and Hachisuka Goemon; she subsequently formed a deep bond with Yoshiharu.

Hanbei possesses a profoundly timid and reclusive nature, rooted in past bullying. This anxiety fuels her fear of direct interaction, leading her to employ a double—the powerful spirit Zenki—as her public face. This arrangement causes many to mistake Minō's genius strategist for an adult male. Alongside her shyness, she holds a strong sense of righteousness and a preference for minimizing bloodshed, often demoralizing enemies instead of inflicting heavy casualties. Yet she exhibits fierce protectiveness, especially toward Yoshiharu, reacting with intense wrath against threats like Danjō. Aware of her fragile health and short lifespan, she initially lacked personal dreams but developed unwavering loyalty to Yoshiharu, dedicating herself to enabling his success and ensuring his safety.

As an onmyōji, Hanbei commands significant spiritual power. She summons and controls shikigami, including Zenki (a fox spirit who was a powerful onmyōji in life) and Gōki (a protective wolf spirit). Her abilities extend to manipulating natural elements, such as conjuring water pillars to block volleys of fire arrows. She notably deployed tactics like Zhuge Liang’s "Stone Sentinel Maze," trapping enemies within the lethal "Eight Gates" formation. To prevent misuse of such power and usher in an era of technology, she sealed the Dragon Veins, the source of her mystical energy. This act severely degraded her health, leaving her unable to survive long without external magical support and barely able to sustain Zenki’s manifestation. Her condition improved after receiving a sacred wooden artifact.

Orphaned young, her closest familial connection was her uncle, Takenaka Shigetora (commonly known as Andō Morinari), a retainer under Yoshitatsu. During her recruitment event in Mino, Yoshiharu and Azai Nagamasa sought to sway her allegiance. Led to her quarters, they initially interacted with Zenki. A prank by Zenki provoked Inuchiyo into attacking the illusion, revealing the real Hanbei. Her cautious nature requires testing newcomers' worthiness, a task Zenki handles through seemingly cruel trials.

Despite her typical timidity, Hanbei transforms into a decisive and vocal leader on the battlefield, confidently shouting orders. She mentors junior tacticians like Kuroda Kanbei, acknowledging their potential. Her relationship with Yoshiharu evolved into profound loyalty and unspoken affection after her rescue. She views him as embodying the righteousness she values, shifting her life's purpose to supporting his ideals. The health crisis induced by sealing the Dragon Veins was resolved through the intervention securing the sacred wood, allowing her continued service.
