Description
Hiroki Shinohara is a supporting character in the space opera narrative, serving as an ensign in the United Nations Cosmo Navy. At twenty-four years old and hailing from Tochigi Prefecture, he holds the rank of Third-grade Space Lieutenant and serves as the second in command of the battleship Yamato's fighter squadron, acting as the reliable right-hand man to the squadron leader, Saburo Kato.

On first impression, Shinohara's appearance can be deceiving. With his long, wavy grey hair and composed demeanor, he comes across as flashy or frivolous, a perception that his easy-going words and deeds might initially reinforce. However, this surface-level impression masks his true nature as a level-headed, reasonable, and exceptionally capable young officer. He is fundamentally friendly and even-tempered, possessing a calm and open-minded acceptance of unexpected developments that allows him to respond to adversity without panic. His personality is marked by a quiet thoughtfulness; he is the kind of person who makes a point of being considerate to those around him, a practice he extends even to treating his onboard computer with polite charm. This affable nature makes him well-liked by his comrades, who appreciate his ability to keep the peace within the mostly male fighter squadron and act as a steadying influence.

A key aspect of Shinohara's background is his relationship with his late father, who was frequently dissatisfied and angry with him during his childhood. When his father was killed in the Garmillas planet bombing campaign against Earth, any hatred Shinohara held faded away, and he eventually came to miss him. Despite this painful past, he never outwardly displays any bitterness or sorrow, instead maintaining his typically calm and unflappable exterior. This quiet resilience informs his role in the story, as he focuses entirely on the mission at hand and the welfare of his fellow crew members.

Within the Yamato's structure, Shinohara's role is defined by his professional relationships. He shares a natural rapport and deep mutual trust with his direct superior, Saburo Kato. While Kato is portrayed as somewhat rigid and stubborn, Shinohara acts as a brilliant support, someone content to walk three paces behind and provide quiet counsel, such as when he successfully persuaded Kato to communicate with his own father. However, his closest and most significant relationship is with fellow pilot Akira Yamamoto. Shinohara serves as a calm foil to her more impulsive nature, helping to rein her in and offering a comfortable presence with whom she can share her personal life. They share moments of quiet solidarity, praying together for fallen comrades. While he keeps any personal feelings of attraction largely hidden or only indirectly expressed, his deep care for her is evident through his actions.

As a pilot, Shinohara is not fearless but is marked by a readiness to place himself in harm's way for the sake of the mission. He is highly skilled in a cockpit, piloting a Cosmo Falcon fighter custom-painted with a distinctive shark mouth. One of his most notable contributions comes when he volunteers for a perilous solo reconnaissance mission. Piloting a captured Garmillas fighter, he ventures into the unknown subspace corridor network at Balun. Choosing the callsign Sword 3 in honor of Yamamoto's deceased elder brother, a pilot he admired, he successfully collected ample data before being shot down. Although he sustained serious injuries, he managed to limp back to the Yamato, providing vital intelligence at great personal risk. While he is courageous in combat, he possesses a relatable, less heroic fear of high diving, a vulnerability that adds to his everyman appeal. Throughout the voyage to Iscandar, Shinohara demonstrates consistent growth from a seemingly lightweight support pilot to a dependable and vital member of the crew whose quiet strength and consideration for others leave a lasting impact on those around him.
