Description
Nagisa Yukiai is a high school girl who lives in a seaside town. She has a strong belief in the concept of kotodama, the idea that spirits dwell within words and that spoken words can influence reality. This belief was passed down to her by her grandmother. Nagisa is described as having an impatient and impulsive nature, partly because she struggles to find her future calling or purpose. Despite this restlessness, she is also kind-hearted and driven by a sincere desire to connect with others.
Her journey begins when she wanders into an abandoned mini FM radio station. Acting on a spontaneous impulse, she starts speaking into the microphone as if she were a DJ, and her voice accidentally broadcasts to the local area, reaching someone unexpected. This experience sparks her motivation to use her voice to bring comfort to others. She takes the lead in reviving the old station, renaming it Aquamarine FM, and enlists the help of her school friends to get the broadcasts running. Through this project, she hopes to prove that honest, heartfelt words can reach people and create positive change.
Nagisa forms a particularly important bond with Shion Yazawa, the daughter of the station's former owner, whom she discovers at the site. Shion is initially withdrawn but becomes a close friend and technical partner. Nagisa also works closely with her childhood friends Kaede, Yuu, and others, each of whom contributes unique skills to the radio project. Nagisa’s role in the story is that of the catalyst and the heart of the group; her determination and empathy unite her friends and drive the revival of the station.
Over the course of the film, Nagisa develops from an unsure girl who lacks direction into a confident broadcaster who understands the power of her own voice. She learns to channel her impulsiveness into purposeful action, and her belief in kotodama moves from a simple childhood story into a lived truth that heals old wounds and strengthens her community. Her notable ability is her knack for speaking from the heart and her growing confidence in using the radio to reach people emotionally. She relies on her intuition and empathy rather than technical skills, balancing the more practical contributions of her friends. Through the Aquamarine FM project, Nagisa not only finds her own voice but also helps those around her find theirs.
