Description
Genia Maxwell, later Genia M. Arcs, hails from the eccentric noble House Maxwell in the Kingdom of Elfrieden. As its last survivor, she inherits a legacy of researchers whose experiments often led to untimely demises. Historically, the neighboring Arcs house managed the Maxwell lands, freeing the Maxwells to pursue research until they became financially dependent on Arcs, though they retained ownership of their renovated underground dungeon laboratory. This converted space, cleared of multiple floors and walls, serves as her primary residence and workspace, featuring a modern garage-like entrance contrasting the surrounding fantasy setting.
Driven by intense curiosity and dedication to science, Genia often neglects social conventions and personal well-being. Reclusive yet capable of normal conversation, she disregards noble formalities, prioritizing research in technology, magic, and dungeonology. She exhibits classic "mad scientist" traits: obsessive focus leading to neglect of basic needs, and absentmindedness causing mishaps. One incident involved enchanted arrowheads for reforestation; their accidental activation in the castle courtyard caused uncontrolled tree growth, resulting in her dismissal from the Forbidden Army. Afterwards, her childhood friend Ludwin Arcs sustained her research with personal funds.
Genia's intellect proves pivotal. She challenges spiritual explanations for phenomena like communication gemstones, advocating empirical analysis. Her most significant discovery repurposed "curse ore," a mineral exploding when mined with magic. Identifying its capacity to store and release energy like fossil fuels, she used it to power inventions like a hoop-shaped engine launching airships. This breakthrough carries geopolitical weight, as Elfrieden possesses vast curse ore deposits; potential exploitation risks external conflict if other nations harness it. Her expertise spans dungeonology, biology, chemistry, and physics, earning her the self-proclaimed title of "Overscientist."
Her bond with Ludwin Arcs evolved from friendship to marriage, arranged by King Souma to retain her talents. Though proposed as political, both shared genuine affection and embarrassment during the proposal, with Genia remarking she anticipated it. They married during Souma's coronation. Post-marriage, Genia collaborated internationally on projects like a joint drill with researchers Merula Merlin, Taru Ozumi, and Trill Euphoria. Trill developed intense, sometimes disruptive admiration for her. Despite collaborations, Genia prioritizes time with Ludwin, occasionally expressing irritation when Trill's enthusiasm interrupts them.
Her later work continues advancing the kingdom's technology, though chaotic experiments persist. The dungeon laboratory houses projects like "Mechadra," a mechanized dragon skeleton, and "Little Susumu," reflecting her blend of creativity and unpredictability.
