TV-Series
Description
Adam Weishaupt serves as the primary antagonist of Symphogear AXZ, where he is introduced as the charismatic and enigmatic leader of the Bavarian Illuminati, holding the title of Lodgemaster or Control Bureau Director. His true nature, however, is far more ancient and unusual than his elegant appearance suggests. He is not a human but a discarded prototype, a puppet created by an ancient, god-like race known as the Custodians or Annunaki long before the dawn of prehistoric civilization. Created with what his makers considered perfect attributes, he was ultimately rejected for lacking one crucial quality: the capacity for evolution or innovation. Because he could not grow or change, he was deemed a failure and scheduled for destruction, but he managed to break free and escape.
Personality-wise, Adam presents himself as an effortlessly confident, elegant, and sophisticated individual, often cloaking his true intentions behind a sarcastic smile and disarmingly smooth demeanor. He is vain, taking great pride in his appearance and perceived perfection. However, this facade conceals a deeply uncaring, sadistic, and power-hungry psychopath. He views all other beings, including his own subordinates in the Illuminati, as nothing more than disposable tools or pawns to be used in pursuit of his goals. A notable and ironic aspect of his character is his official description as the ultimate incompetent boss. Despite his immense personal power, he is incapable of generating new ideas or strategies on his own, a direct consequence of his perfect but static nature. He compensates for this flaw by exploiting the creativity and intellect of other alchemists, claiming their research and discoveries as his own path to power.
Adam's primary motivation stems from the rejection by his creators and his subsequent desire to prove his superiority over them. He seeks to acquire a divine power to elevate himself to the level of a god, becoming what he calls Adam Kadmon. His goal is not merely to stand equal to his creators but to surpass them and forcibly reshape imperfect humanity according to his own rigid and perfect design, ruling over the world as its supreme being. This desire for revenge and dominion is the driving force behind the creation of the Bavarian Illuminati, a secret society he founded to research alchemy and gather the power he needed.
In the story of AXZ, Adam initially operates from the shadows, directing the alchemists Saint-Germain, Cagliostro, and Prelati to carry out his plans. He makes a dramatic physical appearance by performing a powerful alchemical technique, gold transmutation, which creates a miniature nuclear fusion reaction, demonstrating his overwhelming might. His relationships are entirely transactional. He sees the three alchemists as expendable assets, callously sacrificing them when it suits his ritual to obtain divine power. He has a peculiar relationship with the artificial lifeform Tiki, whom he treats as a companion but ultimately discards without hesitation when she is no longer useful or becomes an obstacle. Saint-Germain, in particular, serves as a foil; while she dreams of using divine power to liberate humanity, Adam reveals he has no such intention, viewing her ideals as naive.
Adam's development throughout the season involves the gradual stripping away of his elegant facade. After exhausting much of his power, he is forced to abandon his handsome human guise and reveal his true form, a monstrous, demonic goat-like creature that he had kept hidden out of shame. This final form represents the ugly, demonic nature that was always hidden beneath his pride and vanity. His notable abilities are vast, stemming from his nature as a super high-class alchemist. He is capable of utilizing any alchemical technique developed by his subordinates, including the manipulation of the four classical elements. His signature ability is gold transmutation, a process that uses nuclear fusion to create gold, generating destructive, explosion-like force comparable to the Tunguska event. He also possesses immense magical power, telepathy, and immortality, having lived for millennia.
