Description
Keith Kazama Flick is a central figure in the narrative, known as a legendary former detective with a genius-level intellect. His past is marked by tragedy; he retired from the police force after his adopted younger sister, Erika, was murdered eight years before the main events. Following this traumatic loss, he fell into a period of depression and isolation, living alone in an apartment consumed by his obsessive investigations into her death. He is eventually called back to duty by his old friend Eric Toga to assist the Royal Investigation Service, a special criminal investigation force known as the RIS, in tracking down a serial killer nicknamed Killer B.
Keith has a disheveled and unkempt appearance, with shaggy brown hair, dark teal eyes, and glasses. He has a noticeable scar running from the bridge of his nose down under his right eye. His typical attire consists of an unbuttoned jacket over a white shirt, and he often appears physically out of shape, with a tendency to frequently fall over. His personality presents a stark contrast between a lazy, absentminded, and short-tempered exterior and an intensely focused, calculating interior. He is an introvert who prefers his privacy and has a habit of running off on his own during investigations, but he recognizes when he needs help, even if he struggles to ask for it. His genius is primarily expressed through mathematics, to the point where he visualizes cases and even creates portraits using complex formulas, often covering entire rooms with his equations. He is nicknamed Genie by his colleagues in reference to his incredible deductive abilities.
His primary motivation is deeply personal: to uncover the truth behind his sister Erika’s murder and bring her killer to justice. This obsession drives his actions as the Killer B case unfolds, as he suspects it may be connected to Erika's death. In his role within the RIS, he serves as the brilliant but unorthodox investigator whose logical deductions and ability to see patterns others miss are crucial to solving the case. His key relationships are central to his development. His bond with his father, Heath Kazama Flick, a genetic researcher, is shown as warm and respectful. His relationship with his late sister Erika is the emotional core of his past, and hints suggest she may have harbored deeper feelings for him. The most pivotal dynamic is with the serial killer Gilbert Ross, a former friend and intellectual rival whom Keith describes as the one who would create puzzles for him to solve. Gilbert's guilt over Erika's death and his desire to be stopped by Keith drive the conflict to its conclusion. Keith also becomes intertwined with the character Koku, whose existence was made possible by Keith's childhood translation of an ancient text, the Jet Black Epitaph. Seeking Koku's help, Keith eventually earns his trust, and they develop a mentor-student relationship, with Keith offering Koku and Yuna a place to live after the case is resolved. His relationship with his colleague Lily Hoshina evolves from annoyance at her persistence to a respectful acknowledgment of her abilities, though he remains protective of her due to a resemblance she bears to himself and Erika.
Throughout the story, Keith undergoes significant development, moving from a traumatized recluse obsessed with a past tragedy to a man who finds closure and a new purpose. By confronting Gilbert and solving his sister’s case, he is able to emerge from his isolation and re-engage with the world, ultimately forming new familial bonds with Koku and Yuna. His notable abilities are entirely non-supernatural, stemming from his extraordinary intellect. He possesses extreme logical deduction skills, a near-photographic memory, and the ability to use mathematical formulas to map out criminal patterns and predict actions, making him a formidable force against both human and superhuman adversaries.
