Description
Enokida is a prominent character known for his role as a genius hacker and informant operating in the vibrant and dangerous underworld of Fukuoka. His most recognizable feature is his dyed platinum blond hair, which is cut in a style with long bangs that cover nearly half of his face, a look that gives his head a resemblance to an enoki mushroom and is the source of his nickname. His typical outfit is both casual and colorful, consisting of a yellow parka, red skinny jeans, and black-and-white checkered shoes.

Regarding his background, Enokida was born as Chihiro Matsuda into a wealthy and influential political family, as his father was a politician. His upbringing was strict and unhappy, leading him to frequently rebel against his father. As a teenager, he intentionally hacked into his father's personal files during a crucial election period, an act that caused a major scandal. In response, his father ordered a trusted servant named Yagi to dispose of him. Yagi took pity on Enokida and, instead of killing him, provided him with a plane ticket to Fukuoka and let him escape, effectively faking his death to free him from his father's control. It was later revealed that Enokida's father had secretly ordered Yagi to spare him all along, showing a hidden concern for his son. After arriving in Fukuoka, Enokida started working for an overseas hacker group but was eventually captured by an organization. While being interrogated by a torturer named José Martínez, Enokida managed to avoid divulging critical information by talking about his personal history, which impressed Martínez and earned him a lasting friend and ally. This event led him to eventually become a completely freelance hacker operating out of Fukuoka.

In terms of personality, Enokida is an aloof and playful individual who is highly observant and able to see through lies. He is openly mercenary, and according to his associate Lin Xianming, he will do anything for money, for good or bad reasons. He is known to sell his services to anyone, even if it knowingly puts his friends in danger, though he always gives them fair warning and has great faith in their ability to survive the difficult situations he sometimes creates. He possesses a strong sense of pride and assertiveness regarding his unparalleled hacking abilities. Beyond his professional work, he often uses his skills for his own entertainment, engaging in pranks such as toying with street lights to make them all turn red or changing the weekly regional weather forecast. He believes that people associated with the underground, like himself, will not have easy deaths, so he is committed to living a comfortable life and doing as he pleases while he can.

Enokida's role in the story is primarily that of an information broker who provides crucial intelligence to other main characters, most notably the detective Zenji Banba, who is a long-time acquaintance. He often works from an internet cafe in the Gate's Building, where he maintains a network of information gatherers who perform legwork for him. He plays a pivotal role in several major events, such as the Mayor Harada Scandal, where he hacks into a killer database, provides key evidence, and uses an electromagnetic hijack to broadcast a damning confession across Fukuoka. He also has a significant character arc where a group of cyber-terrorist hitmen known as M3 place a bounty on his head, forcing him to use all his wit and cunning to outsmart them. During this conflict, he achieves a partial reconciliation with his father.

His key relationships are varied but significant. He has a professional and trusting partnership with Zenji Banba, often providing him with information and custom-made GPS listening devices called redback spiders. He is close friends with the torturer José Martínez, who respects him greatly. He has a complex relationship with his former butler Yagi, who saved his life. While he often uses other people, like the hapless killer Kazuki Saito, as bait for his plans, his actions and warnings demonstrate a degree of care for his associates.

Throughout the series, Enokida does not undergo a dramatic personality shift, but his character is deepened by the exploration of his past. His arc with the M3 cyber-terrorists forces him to confront his familial issues, leading to a quiet, touching moment where he uses his hacking skills to send his father a birthday greeting, suggesting a small step towards healing a broken relationship. His development reaffirms his core philosophy: he will use his extraordinary talents to survive and enjoy life on his own terms, while still displaying a subtle loyalty to the small circle of people he considers his own.

Enokida's notable abilities are centered on his genius-level hacking, which allows him to infiltrate secure databases, manipulate public infrastructure, and hijack broadcast signals. He is also a skilled inventor, creating sophisticated surveillance devices like his redback spider transmitters, which are equipped with GPS. His intelligence and strategic thinking are formidable, allowing him to orchestrate complex plans that often involve multiple moving parts and people to outmaneuver his enemies. His speed and agility are also highlighted during baseball games, where he proves to be a surprisingly effective player despite his slight build.
