TV Special
Description
Ashie Miskina is a character from the One Piece: Heart of Gold special. He is a middle-aged man with a worn-down and disheveled appearance, characterized by his wild blond hair, full beard, and a large, robust frame. This physique is a result of spending two hundred years surviving on a monotonous diet of meat. He wears a tattered white lab coat over a green shirt, clothes that have become too small and worn after centuries of use. To protect himself from predators, he also fashioned a stitched dinosaur costume for camouflage.
Despite his haggard exterior, Ashie is a scientist of extremely high intelligence. His personality is defined by a deep, abiding love for his family, particularly his daughter, Olga. He is willing to go to any lengths, even making a deal with the devil, to ensure their safety. Although he invented the legendary Pure Gold, which brought tragedy to his family, he expresses no regret over its creation, as his sole motivation was to save his dying daughter from a fatal illness. Upon learning that his daughter is still alive after two hundred years, he breaks down in joyful tears and is immediately prepared to sacrifice his life to save her again. He also shares a common enthusiasm for robots, being delighted by the Franky Shogun.
Ashie's backstory is rooted in tragedy and sacrifice. Over two hundred years ago, he lived happily with his wife and young daughter on the island of Alchemi. When Olga contracted the deadly South Blue Kaiser Fever, for which there was no cure, Ashie dedicated himself to researching a substance that would halt the aging process and defeat the disease. He succeeded in creating the Pure Gold, crafting it into a ring for his daughter. However, the treasure attracted ruthless pirates who attacked the island, resulting in the death of Olga's mother. Blaming her father, Olga threw the ring into the sea, which summoned a massive deep-sea anglerfish named Bonbori. The creature swallowed the island, separating Ashie from his daughter. Believing Olga to be dead, Ashie survived for two centuries inside Bonbori's stomach, living among the dinosaurs there to avoid being eaten.
In the story, Ashie is first encountered by Monkey D. Luffy inside Bonbori, still disguised as a dinosaur. After Luffy frees him from chains, Ashie tells the pirate his story. Luffy, having recently met Olga, reveals that she is alive, filling Ashie with overwhelming joy. The two form a bond and work together to escape the creature's stomach. Ashie uses his unique ability to communicate with the water-walking lizards that inhabit Bonbori, befriending one they name Chavez through a comical staring contest. He guides Luffy through the treacherous environment, using his knowledge of the area's puzzles and traps, which he originally designed as an architect to protect the Pure Gold.
Ashie's key relationships are central to his character. His reunion with his daughter Olga is the emotional core of his arc. After she learns the truth of his intentions from his lab notes, she forgives him, and the two reconcile. He also forms a strong alliance with Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates, who help him rescue Olga and ultimately escape. His development moves from a man haunted by regret and loss to one who regains hope for the future. After escaping, he learns from Chopper that the South Blue Kaiser Fever now has a cure, freeing Olga from her reliance on the Pure Gold. He then looks forward to a peaceful future with his daughter.
In terms of abilities, Ashie is physically weak but an exceptional scientist, having successfully created the Pure Gold and later a serum to temporarily restore his youthful appearance. He is also a gifted architect, having designed a secure hideout for the treasure. His most unusual skill is his ability to communicate with and calm the giant reptiles inside Bonbori, using a specific facial expression that can make both the creatures and even Luffy laugh.
