Description
Lyria is the central heroine of Granblue Fantasy the Animation, a mysterious young girl who possesses the rare and formidable ability to command primal beasts. She has blue hair and blue eyes, stands approximately 152 centimeters tall, and is of human race, though her exact age is unknown. Little is known about Lyria's past prior to her imprisonment by the Erste Empire. She was held captive by the Empire because they coveted her unique power and sought to use her in their experiments to control primal beasts. While in captivity, she was subjected to various experiments, primarily related to dark essence, and she has no clear memories of her life before that time. Her escape from the Empire was engineered by Katalina, the knight who had been assigned as her guardian and who defected after witnessing the cruel treatment Lyria endured. During their flight, the pair encountered Gran in the forests of Zinkenstill. When Gran was fatally wounded while trying to protect Lyria, she linked her life force to his in order to save him, creating a permanent mystical bond that ties their fates together. This soul-link means that if either of them is harmed, the other suffers the same consequences, and they must remain together to survive.
In terms of personality, Lyria is gentle, soft-spoken, and full of wonder and curiosity about the world around her. Having known nothing of the outside world during her imprisonment, she approaches each new experience with enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn. She is energetic and enjoys traveling, discovering new things, singing, and going on walks. She cares deeply for her traveling companions and becomes distraught at the idea of any harm befalling them. Despite the trauma of her past, she maintains a kind and optimistic disposition, though she dislikes monsters and can be frightened by danger. Her primary motivation is to protect her friends and to understand her own identity beyond being a tool that the Empire tried to make of her. As the story progresses, she transitions from a frightened fugitive into a vital member of the crew who uses her powers to protect those she cares about.
Lyria's role in the story is that of a central protagonist and the catalyst for the entire journey. Her escape from the Empire sets the plot in motion, and her connection to primal beasts makes her a target that the crew must defend while also a key asset in overcoming the obstacles they face. Her presence drives much of the conflict with the Erste Empire, and her bond with Gran forms the emotional core of the series. Among her key relationships, the bond with Gran is the most significant, as they share a single life force and must remain together to survive. She views Katalina as an older sister figure and relies on her for protection and guidance. Katalina, for her part, acts as Lyria's guardian and primary protector, having forsaken her oath to the Empire in order to keep Lyria safe. Lyria also develops a close, playful bond with Vyrn, the small winged creature who is Gran's lifelong companion, and she becomes close friends with Io, the young mage who joins the crew. Throughout the series, Lyria's development is centered on her gaining autonomy and coming to understand her own identity and worth beyond the purposes for which the Empire imprisoned her.
Her notable abilities include the power to commune with, control, and summon primal beasts, a capacity represented by a blue jewel that she carries. This ability is the reason the Erste Empire sought to capture and exploit her. Additionally, through her soul-link with Gran, she can heal his wounds when they are in danger, and her heart is said to call forth grand miracles. Her power to command primal beasts makes her a formidable force in battle, as she can summon these ancient creatures to fight alongside the crew. As the series progresses, she learns to use her abilities with greater confidence and control, evolving from a girl who was merely a captive with a mysterious power into an active and courageous member of the skyfaring crew who willingly uses her gifts to protect her friends and pursue their shared journey across the vast skies.
