Description
Rackam is a human man in his late twenties who serves as the helmsman of the airship Grandcypher. He stands 181 centimeters tall and has short brown hair and brown eyes. Before the story begins, he earned a reputation as an exceptionally skilled pilot of skyfaring vessels, admired for his ability to guide airships through the skies. However, a past accident for which he held himself responsible traumatized him deeply, causing him to swear off both airships and the skies entirely. His encounter with the young captain of the crew gives him the chance to overcome that fear, and he agrees to take the helm once more, becoming a dependable and central member of the traveling party.
In personality, Rackam comes across as blunt and somewhat rough around the edges, yet he is genuinely caring and remarkably dependable. He has a strong instinct to look after the people around him and is well liked despite his straightforward manner. He is practical and realistic in his thinking, basing his decisions on experience and solid knowledge rather than idealism. When the more aspirational members of the crew propose bold plans, he tends to offer grounded judgment, favoring safe and reliable choices over unnecessary risks. His strong sense of responsibility and his habit of watching out for others make him something of an older brother figure within the group. He enjoys pastimes such as playing darts and maintaining his guns, likes taking afternoon naps, and dislikes pushy people.
Rackam's main motivation is supporting the crew and ensuring that their journey can continue safely. His practical focus on results and security drives much of his behavior, and he consistently prioritizes the well-being of his companions. Over the course of the story, he develops from a man refusing to fly into one who fully embraces his role as the ship's pilot and a trusted combat ally, with his return to the helm marking a key step in his personal growth.
In the story, Rackam serves multiple essential functions. He handles the navigation of the Grandcypher, manages transport and supply, and performs maintenance and repairs on the vessel, making the group's travels possible from a practical standpoint. He also takes part in combat, where his shooting ability is considered as impressive as his airship handling. His role in battle is that of a skilled gunner, providing fire support for the party.
His key relationships are shaped by these duties. With the captain, Gran, he shares a working bond of helmsman and commander, and he watches over the younger leader with a protective, brotherly attitude, offering advice on practical matters. With Katalina, he has a trusting colleague relationship, with the two dividing responsibilities between combat and navigation to keep the crew functioning smoothly. He treats Lyria as a younger companion in need of protection, taking care of her daily needs and helping to keep her safe throughout the journey. He also interacts with the other crew members as a supportive presence who helps keep the group grounded.
Notable abilities include his masterful piloting of airships, his mechanical and maintenance skills, and his expertise with firearms. He fights using two guns and can engage enemies from both long and close range, and in some depictions his combat style incorporates fire-based techniques and rapid gunfire. His combination of navigation skill, technical know-how, and marksmanship makes him an invaluable member of the crew, both in the skies and on the ground.
