TV-Series
Description
Kuroboshi III, also known as Sansei Kuroboshi, is a human-shaped black cat distinguished by a blue star marking on his forehead. He is the grandson of the original Kuroboshi, an elderly contracted assistant to the shinigami Tamako. In the events of the third season, his grandfather seeks to retire and arranges for Kuroboshi III to receive training under Tamako, aiming to have him take over the role. This background frames his introduction as a budding but inexperienced member of the cast.

His personality is outwardly pleasant and polite. He carries himself with earnestness and a courteous manner, and he is not above light flirtation, especially toward Sakura Mamiya. Beneath this agreeable exterior, however, lies a deep secret shame: Kuroboshi III is terrified of ghosts. This fear is visceral and persistent, shaping much of his behavior and interactions. Despite his anxiety, he remains committed to improving himself and fulfilling his duty, showing a diligent side even when his courage wavers.

His primary motivation is to become a capable black cat contractor for Tamako so that his aging grandfather can finally step down. This sense of familial responsibility drives him to endure training and attempt to overcome his greatest weakness. He strives to be reliable, helping with household chores and supporting Tamako’s work, but his phobia continually tests his resolve.

Within the season, Kuroboshi III serves as a semi-regular supporting character. His appearances frequently highlight the comedic tension between his duties and his fear of the supernatural. Rinne Rokudo and the small black cat Rokumon take an active interest in helping him conquer his terror, but progress is slow and the young cat struggles to move past it. His role adds a layer of gentle humor while also demonstrating the challenges faced by those who work closely with spirits.

Key relationships revolve around the individuals guiding or affected by his training. Tamako is his mentor and the shinigami he is meant to assist, and their bond is built on practical tasks and mutual patience. Rinne and Rokumon function as encouragers and occasional tutors, attempting to desensitize him to ghostly encounters. Kuroboshi III is also sociable with Sakura, often displaying a flirtatious charm in her presence. His grandfather, the original Kuroboshi, remains a looming presence in his mind, representing both a standard to meet and a retirement he wishes to grant.

Development across the season is modest but present. Kuroboshi III repeatedly faces his fear in controlled situations, occasionally mustering small bursts of bravery. While he does not fully overcome his terror, these moments reflect a gradual hardening of his determination. His journey is less about conquering the phobia entirely and more about learning to function despite it.

A most notable ability stems directly from his overwhelming fright. The constant dread he feels toward ghosts has honed an almost preternatural sensitivity to them. Kuroboshi III can detect the presence of nearby phantoms with remarkable accuracy, even sensing those capable of concealing themselves from Rinne and Sakura. This paradoxical talent makes him unexpectedly useful in certain supernatural investigations, turning his greatest weakness into a specialized asset.
