TV-Series
Description
Hitomi Annette Anematsuri is a supporting character who becomes the new homeroom teacher for Rinne Rokudo and Sakura Mamiya's class at Sankai High School. She is a woman of Japanese and French heritage, being one-quarter French due to her grandmother, who was a witch from Medieval France and moved to Japan after meeting a Japanese tourist. This lineage is significant, as her family has passed down a powerful object known as the Scrying Orb for generations, having originally obtained it through a contract made between her witch ancestor and a Shinigami.

Hitomi first appears working as a part-time fortune teller in a shopping mall, where she is known for her startlingly accurate predictions that she makes using the family’s crystal ball. Upon learning she possesses this lost Shinigami tool, which is capable of showing accurate glimpses of the past and the future, Rinne attempts to seize it, but she manages to escape thanks to a warning from the orb itself. She soon afterward transfers to Sankai High as a teacher, taking charge of Rinne and Sakura's class, which surprises her as much as it does them. As a teacher, she is well-liked by most of her students, who affectionately call her Miss Annette, and she teaches English. Despite her formal role, she often gets involved in the supernatural escapades surrounding her students.

In terms of personality, Hitomi is a complex individual with contradictory traits. While she can be kind and caring toward her students, she is also frequently greedy, sly, irresponsible, and notoriously messy. Her living space is often in disarray, and she has a strong aversion to hard work, preferring to spend her time playing video games, shopping, and indulging in luxuries she cannot always afford. She has a deep appreciation for money because of what it can buy, but she is also known for her financial troubles and a tendency to try to avoid paying for things when the bill arrives. This love for luxury and her lazy nature often lead her to hire Rinne for odd jobs, taking advantage of his perpetual poverty, though she always tries to negotiate or get out of paying him fairly. Her motivations are largely self-serving, frequently using her Scrying Orb for personal gain or to maintain her popularity and image as a teacher, but she does show genuine, if sometimes misguided, affection for her students.

The Scrying Orb is central to Hitomi's role in the story and is her most notable ability. The orb is a Shinigami tool with a will of its own; it chooses its master and always returns to them if lost. When used, it provides a view of a person's past or future, often in fragmented and surprising ways that lead to comical twists. Because it is a valuable tool, it is frequently targeted by Shinigami and demons, including Rinne, Renge, and Sabato, but Hitomi is not willing to hand it over for free. Aside from the orb, she possesses other magical tools inherited from her grandmother, such as a White Magic Small Box containing a cloth to cleanse the orb and a Demonic Sword, which is effective as a blunt-force weapon for exorcising evil beings despite having no special magical power on its own. She is a witch who can see spirits, but her magical skills are often flawed or unreliable, making her more dependent on her inherited items.

Hitomi's key relationships are defined by her interactions with the main cast. She has a complex dynamic with Rinne, with whom she shares a mutual understanding of financial hardship, though she exploits his poverty for her own benefit. Her relationship with the demon Masato is one of pure animosity, as she hates him for cursing her Scrying Orb and has physically subdued him in combat. Her home life is shared with her mother and French grandmother, who frequently go on trips to hot springs; when they return, the grandmother is not afraid to physically chastise Hitomi, such as hitting her on the head for her mistakes.

Throughout her appearance in the story, Hitomi undergoes a notable development from a struggling, unemployed university graduate who was kicked out of her home by her family to find work, to a stable (if unconventional) teacher. While her personality remains largely the same, she becomes more integrated into the supernatural world through her students. Her initial motivation is pure survival and personal comfort, but as the series progresses, she settles into her role as a teacher, even as her laziness and financial schemes continue to cause trouble and humor.
