Description
Oboro is a supporting character in the anime RIN-NE 3, a male member of the black cat clan who serves as the contracted black cat of the shinigami Ageha. He comes from a family with a long tradition of serving Ageha's household, and he upholds that arrangement even though the relationship between the two is marked by deep mutual resentment. Within the black cat ranking system, he holds the grade of first dan.
In appearance, Oboro is a humanoid black cat who looks about the age of a middle school student. He has red eyes and medium-length black hair, with cat ears that droop down over the sides of his head so that they resemble a chullo hat. His build is extremely slender and supple, with long arms and cat-like feet, and his face and body are noticeably more human-like than those of other black cats such as Rokumon, with a clearly defined neck and shoulders. He wears a red, armor-like outfit and gloves, and his hands have five fingers on each side.
Oboro is hot-tempered and quick to pick a fight, and he is recognized for his high combat ability. He frequently behaves in an unprofessional manner toward Ageha, his employer, and their partnership is defined more by bickering and open hostility than by loyalty or warmth. The source of this antagonism lies in their shared history: during their first mission together as children, Ageha trapped Oboro under a boulder for an entire year. That childhood mistreatment left a lasting grudge, and although the two continue to honor their contract and cooperate when necessary, the resentment never fully disappears.
His role in the story is that of a recurring supporting presence who accompanies Ageha in her ongoing conflicts with Rinne and the various shinigami, spirits, and supernatural figures around them. As a contracted black cat, he assists in missions and fights alongside his employer, and his impulsive nature often puts him at odds with others. His primary motivation is satisfying the family obligation to serve Ageha's line, though his personal grudge against Ageha complicates that duty and gives their working relationship a persistent undercurrent of conflict.
In combat, Oboro relies on his long, razor-sharp claws, which he uses to tear through opponents, and his slender, flexible body makes him an agile and capable fighter. He is generally portrayed as skilled and effective in battle despite his short temper and disrespectful attitude toward his employer.
His development across the series is centered almost entirely on his relationship with Ageha. The bitterness from their childhood mission persists, yet the two remain bound together by contract and tradition, and their continued partnership implies a grudging reliance on each other beneath the constant fighting. Oboro does not undergo a major personal transformation, but his background establishes him as a figure caught between inherited duty and personal grievance, and his dynamic with Ageha remains a consistent source of friction and comedy in the series.
