TV-Series
Description
Kain is a young shinigami who works as a shirushigami, a bookkeeper in the afterlife. His primary responsibility is to track the lifespans of humans on Earth, a clerical duty that informs the broader shinigami network when and where their services are needed to guide souls to the Wheel of Reincarnation. Despite his desk job, Kain has taken it upon himself to operate in the field to bring down a rogue organization known as the Damashigami Company.
In appearance, Kain is distinguished by his silvery-white hair and sharp blue eyes. He is often seen wearing glasses while working and typically dresses in a shirushigami uniform consisting of an ivory jacket and a pine green hakama.
Kain possesses a very serious and driven personality, with a deep-seated hatred for the Damashigami president, Sabato Rokudō. This hatred stems from Sabato's manipulation of Kain's mother, using her money and naivete to financially back his corrupt company, which ultimately left Kain and his mother in poverty. This resentment extends to Sabato's son, Rinne Rokudō, whom Kain initially considers guilty by association. This grudge leads him to take extreme measures when he first encounters Rinne. Kain attacks him, showing little regard for the rules of the afterlife, and even attempts to end Rinne's life early by stealing his life flame, with no remorse when an innocent human bystander becomes caught in the conflict.
However, Kain operates within certain limits. He cannot directly harm humans or force those not ready to die onto the Wheel of Reincarnation, as he would face punishment for such actions. As a shirushigami, he can be quite bossy toward other shinigami, yet he is also capable of carelessness when it comes to security matters. He has a strong aversion to shame, particularly concerning his family's financial struggles due to his mother's poor choices, and he greatly dislikes being forced to apologize, especially to Rinne.
Kain's motivations are primarily driven by his love for his mother and his desire to protect her from the truth about Sabato, whom he despises. He works in secrecy to hunt damashigami and dismantle their company, hiding his family's connection to the organization. In his role in the story, he often clashes with Rinne, seizing any opportunity to put him at a disadvantage, though on occasion he will reluctantly cooperate with him to achieve their common goal of bringing down Sabato.
Several key relationships define Kain's actions. His relationship with his mother is one of deep care and protection, as he tries to shield her from the painful reality of her situation. He has a slowly blossoming connection with Renge Shima, whom he has always seen as pure, true, and beautiful. He is unaware that she works directly for the Damashigami Company he hates and refuses to believe the rumors about her true occupation, even stating that it is his dream for her to succeed in life. In contrast, he considers his sister, Ageha, an idiot for serving as the Damashigami President's assistant. He also has a black cat named Suzu, who is loyal to him despite her carefree attitude often annoying him.
Throughout the series, Kain undergoes some development. While his opinion of Rinne remains largely negative, he can sometimes be reasoned with and will collaborate with him when necessary to arrest Sabato. He does not repeat his initial extreme attempt to end Rinne's life, though he still looks for opportunities to make things unfavorable for him. Notably, he eventually expresses gladness when Renge quits being a damashigami and becomes an employee at the Mortal Census Bureau, suggesting a future where his idealized perception of her might align with reality.
In terms of abilities, Kain possesses standard shinigami powers, including flight, invisibility, enhanced senses, and skill in fighting with a scythe. As a shirushigami, his scythe has a distinct appearance from standard shinigami scythes and is powerful enough to extract life flames. He also wields seizure talismans as part of his equipment.
