Description
Kaban is the central character of the 2017 anime, a human Friend who awakens in the savanna region of Japari Park with no memory of who she is or where she came from. Her name is given to her by her first companion, Serval, who notices the white backpack, or kaban, that she carries. In terms of appearance, Kaban has short, messy black hair and grey-blue eyes. She wears a battered white safari hat reminiscent of a pith helmet, which originally belonged to a park guide named Mirai. Her outfit consists of a red v-necked shirt with black trim over a dark gray undershirt, grayish-white pants, black stockings, gloves, and brown boots.

Kaban has a reserved, calm, and caring personality, which forms a gentle contrast to Serval's more energetic and hyperactive nature. She tends to think through her words carefully and is not as quick to make remarks as her friend. Despite being easily frightened and often shouting things like Do not eat me! when startled, she demonstrates remarkable bravery and composure when it truly matters. Her kindness is a defining trait; she consistently offers sincere compliments to others, such as praising Crested Ibis's singing rather than criticizing it. She is consistently polite, never displays anger or annoyance towards others, and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Kaban also shows a strong sense of gratitude, appreciating the help she receives throughout her journey and the experiences she has in Japari Park.

Kaban's central motivation is a search for her own identity. She begins her journey with the simple goal of visiting the Japari Library to learn what kind of Friend she is. This personal quest gradually evolves into a deeper desire to find other humans and uncover the mysteries of the park's past. However, her primary motivation ultimately shifts from self-discovery to selfless protection, as she repeatedly prioritizes the safety of her friends and the park over her own goal of finding other humans. She is willing to sacrifice her own chance to leave the island to confront a major threat, demonstrating a profound sense of duty and care for the community she has found.

In the story, Kaban serves as the protagonist, with her journey to the library forming the core narrative. The plot follows her and Serval as they traverse various biomes of Japari Park, encountering and helping numerous other Friends along the way. She is uniquely able to communicate with the robotic Lucky Beast known as Boss, which serves as her guide and grants her access to recorded messages from the past. Her role evolves from a confused amnesiac to a decisive leader; in the climax, Boss even designates her as a temporary park guide, giving her full authority to coordinate the other Friends in a plan to defeat a giant Cellien.

Her key relationships are central to the story. Her bond with Serval is the most significant; they are inseparable companions who perfectly complement each other. While Serval provides physical ability and enthusiasm, Kaban contributes intelligence and problem-solving skills, and they care for each other deeply to the point of self-sacrifice. The Lucky Beast, Boss, is another crucial figure, serving as a silent guide that only responds to Kaban, providing her with information and historical context. She also forms positive, but less central, bonds with a wide cast of other Friends, including the common raccoon, fennec fox, the owls at the library, and many others she assists on her journey.

Kaban undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. She begins as an amnesiac with no knowledge of her own nature, evolves into a character who learns she is a human, a species believed to be extinct. Her journey is one of self-discovery that transforms into a heroic arc. She develops from being someone who is easily scared into a courageous individual willing to dive into a Cellien to save a friend. A key moment of development is when she rejects Boss's order to evacuate, choosing instead to stay and fight for the park she has come to care about, culminating in her temporary death and subsequent rebirth as a human Friend. After the main conflict, she takes on a more mature role, leaving the main island in a modified Japari Bus turned boat to search for other regions where humans might exist.

Despite lacking the physical abilities of animal Friends, Kaban possesses remarkable notable abilities centered on her intelligence and resourcefulness. She is an adept problem-solver and strategist, able to devise clever plans under pressure, such as creating paper airplanes to distract enemies, building a sled for a quick escape, or constructing bridges. She can read maps and text, a skill many Friends lack, and is proficient with tools. Her dexterity allows her to perform tasks like cooking curry or creating a log house model. She also demonstrates the ability to learn new skills quickly, such as tree-climbing, which she learns from Serval and later uses to rescue her. While not a physical powerhouse, her quick thinking and creativity prove to be her greatest strengths.
