TV-Series
Description
Mai is one of the three central characters in the manga club at the center of this series, where she is a classmate of Ai and a childhood friend of Mi. Her background is steeped in the show's trademark surrealism, with one account stating she was once stranded in the mountains and proceeded to attack and bury everyone who came to rescue her. The narrative also includes a flashback suggesting she is the reincarnation of an angel named Shakalafy, who was once a comrade of a demonic hamster before they became locked in an eight-hundred-year war.

Mai possesses a personality with contrasting facets. She is often described as naive, innocent, and having an affectionate, straightforward demeanor. Her behavior can be childlike, such as a recurring struggle with bed-wetting. However, this innocence is frequently juxtaposed with a more sadistic or mischievous side, as she can be impulsive and is prone to joining Mi in tormenting Ai. She is not the club's dedicated manga artist; rather, she is content to disrupt Ai's work, viewing it as an intrusion on their time together. This impulsiveness drives much of the group's chaos, leading her into strange situations, such as becoming so absorbed in playing with a hamster that she accidentally transforms it into a savory egg dish.

In the story, Mai functions as a primary source of absurdist conflict and a key partner-in-crime to Mi. Together, they form a comedic duo that constantly interrupts the manga club's activities, leaving Ai to act as the exasperated straight man. Her motivations are rarely grand, instead revolving around immediate desires for fun, friendship, and maintaining the group's peculiar status quo. Even when faced with bizarre revelations, such as learning of her own angelic past or encountering interdimensional threats, her primary concern often remains grounded in mundane, daily-life problems.

Her most significant relationship is with Ai and Mi, the trio forming a tight, if dysfunctional, unit. While she and Mi are childhood friends and co-conspirators in absurdity, her bond with Ai is more complicated; she seems genuinely fond of Ai, even as her actions consistently sabotage Ai's manga ambitions. The show occasionally touches on the depth of this friendship, as seen when a repressed, hateful personality called Dark Ai emerges in response to their relentless bullying, forcing Mai to confront the consequences of her actions. She also has brief but odd encounters with the enigmatic upperclassman Ponoka-senpai, from whom Mi once sought advice about friendship.

While the series prioritizes comedy over continuity, Mai exhibits moments of development. One episode explores her anxiety over the nature of her friendship with Mi, revealing a hidden insecurity beneath her carefree surface. Her notable abilities are as unconventional as the show itself. Beyond a talent for physical comedy and mischief, she has demonstrated the capacity for extreme acts of violence, such as repeatedly punching another character for making the audience wait. In one of the series's more fantastical turns, she even transforms into a unicorn, using her horn to attack a celebrity based on the perceived purity of their handwriting.
