Description
Koume Yukimi is one of the main protagonists of Urara Meirocho. She arrives in Meirocho as a fifteen-year-old apprentice fortune teller, known as an Urara, lodging at the Natsume-ya teahouse alongside three other trainees. Physically, she is recognized by her dark violet hair tied in pigtails and her scarlet or aubergine eyes. She typically dresses in a witch-inspired outfit consisting of a black shirt with a pink bow, white and purple long sleeves, a teal belt, a pink skirt, and black socks, reflecting her fascination with Western occult imagery.
Her background is that of a privileged upbringing as the daughter of the wealthy Yukimi Industrial Group. In her childhood, a Western witch named Marie Quispilquette came to live with her family. Through daily contact, Koume grew captivated by the witch’s manner, clothing, and divinatory arts, igniting a lasting dream to become a witch herself. This encounter defines her ambition to excel as an Urara specializing in Western-style fortune-telling.
Koume’s personality is energetic and somewhat prideful. She carries a confident air that can come across as self-centered at times, particularly early in her apprenticeship. Through her shared life and training with the other Natsume-ya girls, however, she gradually learns to soften her competitive edge and become more attentive to the emotions and needs of those around her. Her pride remains a driving force, but it evolves into a healthier sense of mutual respect and camaraderie.
Her primary motivation is to become a top-ranked Urara and, in her own eyes, a witch worthy of the name. She idolizes the image of the Western witch and channels that admiration into the study of tarot card divination, which is her specialty. She does not merely seek status or power; she chases a childhood fascination transformed into a sincere vocation, and she values the bonds she forms along the way as part of that journey.
Within the story, Koume is one of the four central apprentices at Natsume-ya. The narrative follows their collective efforts to learn fortune-telling, earn ranks, and support one another’s dreams. Koume often functions as a source of bold initiative and occasional comic arrogance, balanced by her growing empathy. She also plays the role of a friendly rival, especially toward Chiya, motivating herself and others through spirited competition.
Her key relationships are with the other three main girls. With Chiya, she develops a friendship built equally on rivalry and deep trust; an early episode sees their hair and clothing accidentally tangled, forcing them to cooperate and ultimately acknowledge each other as both friends and rivals. Kon Tatsumi and Nono Natsume are her fellow apprentices, and their contrasting personalities help round out Koume’s perspective, teaching her patience and compromise. Nina Natsume, the tea house owner, acts as a guiding mentor, while the patrol officer Saku Iroi serves as an occasional authority figure and protector of the town’s rules, influencing Koume’s understanding of responsibility.
Over the course of the series, Koume’s development centers on humility and emotional growth. She starts with a narrow, self-oriented drive to become a witch and gradually recognizes the importance of listening and supporting others. Her vulnerability surfaces in moments when her pride is challenged, and these experiences cultivate a more cooperative spirit without damping her inherent enthusiasm.
Her most notable ability is tarot card reading, a rare Western-style divination method within the heavily traditional Urara town. She applies learned symbolism and intuition to interpret the cards, and her witch-themed presentation underscores her specialization. While she does not possess supernatural powers beyond the fortune-telling arts practiced by all Urara, her distinctive style and committed study make her a recognizable and determined presence among the apprentice fortune tellers.
