Description
Kukuri is a local deity known as a God of the Land, specifically one incarnation of many gods collectively referred to as Kukuri. She resides over the Kamioka region, where she dispels curses and safeguards the area. Her existence is tied to her divine role as a guardian of the land, which grants her immortality and prevents her from aging. She recruits the protagonist Kazuya Kagami to serve as her exorcist, aiding him in his duties to confront supernatural threats and cleanse malevolent spirits. Despite her elevated status, she lives a modest and often financially strained lifestyle, relying on charitable offerings from the local community for her day-to-day needs.

Her personality is marked by a calm and composed demeanor, though she can be stubborn when her authority is challenged. She holds immense pride in her divine position and frequently reminds others of her godly standing. However, she struggles to project an imposing or fearsome presence. Characters with more forceful personalities, such as the tsugumomo Kiriha, often ridicule or dismiss her, which she finds frustrating. Beneath her dignified front, she is genuinely friendly and approachable to the townspeople, and she is deeply loyal to Kazuya. She avoids direct conflict when possible, preferring to adapt to situations by mirroring others’ opinions to maintain harmony, and she sometimes shows indecisiveness. Her motivations center on protecting the people under her care, restoring balance, and supporting Kazuya’s mission to recover his mother’s power and defeat evil spirits.

Kukuri’s primary role in the story is that of a guiding figure and mission-giver. She sets Kazuya on his path as an exorcist, providing essential knowledge and tasks. Her key relationship is with Kazuya, whom she recruits and assists with steadfast devotion. She interacts with other spiritual entities like Kiriha, who tends to overshadow her in both authority and assertiveness, leading to a humorous rivalry. She is also cordial with the locals, who view her with reverence yet treat her as a familiar presence.

Over the course of the narrative, Kukuri becomes more deeply involved in Kazuya’s battles and personal growth. While she initially serves mainly as a patron and coordinator, her own abilities and limitations are tested as threats escalate. She demonstrates her capabilities in combat support, particularly through barrier creation and elemental summoning, and she possesses a keen spiritual perception that allows her to detect other tsugumomo or supernatural presences. These powers make her an indispensable ally, even if her personality remains more restrained than that of frontline fighters. Through her involvement, she gradually reveals her own history and the weight of her long existence, adding depth to her otherwise serene exterior.
