Description
Mahmut, whose full name is Tughril Mahmut, is the main protagonist of the story, a young prodigy who holds the historic distinction of being the youngest Pasha in the history of the Türkiye Stratocracy, having achieved the rank at the age of seventeen. Physically, he is a young man of fair and slender build with neck-length golden blonde hair that often falls over his left eye. He has soft facial features with baby blue eyes, a small nose, and a complexion that is frequently described as beautiful, to the point that his appearance has allowed him to convincingly cross-dress when the situation required it. His typical attire consists of a white salvar, a black-collared white inner shirt, a red yelek, and black cedik boots, all adorned with circular golden linings; for formal occasions, he wears a red and white turban.

His background is defined by a childhood tragedy. Mahmut was born in Tughril Village, a community of expert falconers, where he lived a happy life with his mother until the age of five, when war broke out between Türkiye and the neighboring Balt-Rhein Empire. The conflict led to the complete devastation of his village, claiming the lives of all its inhabitants, including his mother, who sacrificed herself to hide him. Mahmut was the sole survivor alongside his domesticated golden eagle, Iskandar. Following the massacre, he was found and adopted by Sehir Halil, a senior Pasha who promised never to leave him alone. This traumatic event became the singular driving force behind Mahmut's ambition to become a Pasha, as he swore to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again and vowed to never lose anyone precious to him because of war.

In terms of personality, Mahmut is generally a kind and intelligent individual with a powerful and deeply ingrained sense of justice. At the beginning of his journey, his strong convictions are often accompanied by a notable impulsiveness and an idealistic naivety, especially in matters of foreign policy and realpolitik. He is initially a bit inconsiderate and reckless, driven by a single-minded goal to protect his country. However, as the story progresses and he is forced to confront the complex and often harsh realities of politics and warfare, he undergoes significant personal growth. He becomes more mature, cautious, and discerning, learning to temper his ideals with pragmatism while still striving to minimize bloodshed whenever possible. Despite his growing wisdom, he is known to be easily flustered by women when they interact with him in an unprofessional manner, a trait that his friends often tease him about. In his free time, he enjoys writing poetry and is noted by the series creator to be more of a diligent hard worker than a natural-born genius, contrary to the perception of many within his world.

Mahmut's role in the story is that of a central figure whose evolution from an idealistic young officer to a skilled diplomat and strategist forms the narrative's core. Initially serving on the general's council of Türkiye, he finds his country under the looming threat of the expansionist Balt-Rhein Empire. After playing a vital role in resolving schemes within his own nation, he embarks on a journey across the continent to gain experience and witness the wider world, only to see the empire's growing influence firsthand. His quest to protect his homeland leads him to travel extensively, forming crucial alliances between Türkiye and other nations such as the Republic of Venedik and the Urado Kingdom. Over time, his exploits earn him great prestige, and he is eventually appointed as the Idare, or governor, of the Chielo Province, a rank equivalent to a vizier.

Key relationships play a vital role in shaping his character. His bond with his adoptive grandfather, Sehir Halil, provides him with guidance and a moral compass. His friendship with Şapka Ibrahim, a former classmate from the Military Academy, is one of his closest and most steadfast, with Mahmut demonstrating unwavering faith in him during times of crisis. His relationship with the more militant Pasha, Zahir Zaganos, evolves significantly from initial conflict and opposition to a deep-seated, if independent, respect, with Zaganos becoming an unconscious role model for him. He also shares a growing camaraderie with Shara, whom he meets early on and collaborates with on several missions. Most importantly, his partnership with his eagle, Iskandar, is a constant and defining element of his identity.

Regarding his abilities, Mahmut's primary asset is his bright and strategic mind, which repeatedly saves Türkiye from seemingly hopeless situations in both diplomacy and military tactics. Despite his small stature, he is also a highly capable combatant, demonstrating skillful use of various weapons, and is an exceptionally talented horse rider. However, the signature skill that earns him the alias Golden Eagle General is his mastery of falconry. Having trained with Iskandar since his mother's death, he is able to direct his eagle with deadly effect for reconnaissance and combat, and is even proficient in using specialized bait and techniques to command large flocks of birds.
