Ayumu Murase
Description
Ayumu Murase is a Japanese voice actor born on December 14, 1988, in Los Angeles, California. He spent his early childhood in the United States before relocating to Aichi Prefecture in Japan, where he lived through his high school years. He later attended university in Kyoto Prefecture. Murase's interest in performance led him to enroll in the Japan Narration Actors Institute during his second year of college, and he joined the talent agency VIMS in 2010.
Murase made his professional debut in 2011 with a small role in the anime Persona 4: The Animation. His first major recurring role came in 2012 as the 14-year-old version of Shun Aonuma in the science fiction series From the New World. However, his career breakthrough arrived in 2014 when he was cast as the energetic protagonist Shoyo Hinata in the popular sports anime Haikyu!!, marking his first leading role in a television series. This performance established him as a rising talent in the industry.
In 2016, Murase's growing prominence was recognized when he received the Best New Actor award at the 10th Seiyu Awards, sharing the honor with fellow recipients. This accolade highlighted his rapid ascent since his debut. After 13 years with VIMS, Murase departed from the agency on April 30, 2023, to establish his own personal agency, Aster Nine, effective May 1, 2023, seeking greater autonomy in managing his career.
Murase is renowned for his distinctive high-pitched and androgynous vocal quality, which enables him to portray a wide spectrum of characters across age and gender. He frequently voices pre-pubescent boys, characters who appear androgynous or cross-dress, and even ordinary female roles with a naturalness that often surprises listeners. His vocal range also extends to lower-pitched, more mature characters, demonstrating considerable versatility. This ability to seamlessly transition between different vocal registers has led to the popular saying among fans about the "proper way to use Ayumu Murase". He is also noted for his competent singing ability, often performing while maintaining character voices, and for his proficiency in English, which he utilizes in roles requiring English dialogue.
Among his numerous and varied roles are Shoyo Hinata in Haikyu!!, Iruma Suzuki in Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun, and Luck Voltia in Black Clover. He also voiced the title character Joker in Mysterious Joker, Allen Walker in D.Gray-man HALLOW, and Kazuki Yasaka in Sarazanmai. In 2021, he portrayed the shadowy companion Kage in Ranking of Kings. The year 2022 saw him in roles such as Kappei in Ninjala, Solomon in She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man, and Jinon in Love of Kill. His film work includes roles in The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh as Tristan and Goodbye, Don Glees! as Shizuku "Drop" Sakuma. He also voices the popular character Venti in the video game Genshin Impact.
In a historic casting decision for the long-running Pretty Cure franchise, Murase was chosen to voice Tsubasa Yuunagi / Cure Wing in the 2023 series Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure, becoming the first male voice actor to play a main Cure character. He has also taken on other significant roles, including Dali in Migi & Dali and Crimson in Ragna Crimson. Murase continues to be an active and sought-after voice actor, with recent projects including the role of Mitile in Mahō Tsukai no Yakusoku - Promise of Wizard.
