Description
Heikan is one of the nine children born from the Dragon King, making him a figure of high mythical lineage. He is specifically entrusted with the management of the Purple Water Gate, a duty that highlights his official standing and sense of responsibility. His appearance is characterized by gray hair, often tied back, and brown eyes, giving him a composed and striking look.

In terms of personality, Heikan is initially perceived as cold and reserved. However, this exterior masks a more complex emotional core. He holds a deep, unwavering respect and adoration for his father, the Dragon King, which is a central driving force behind many of his actions. Conversely, he harbors a strong antipathy towards both Hakugo and the protagonist Ichiyo. This dislike is so pronounced that it frequently leads to open arguments and conflict, particularly with Ichiyo. Despite his usual cool demeanor, Heikan is not immune to fear or panic; in critical or high-pressure emergencies, he can show visible signs of nervousness or distress.

Heikan's motivations are deeply rooted in his family loyalty and a desire for understanding. Although he dislikes Ichiyo, he makes the conscious decision to become his servant. This choice is not born out of newfound friendship but from a calculated desire to learn about various matters and the wider world, suggesting an underlying curiosity that overrides his personal grudges.

Within the story's progression, Heikan's role expands significantly when the party must travel to an underwater realm. There, it is revealed that he is the son of Otohime, making him part of a unique heritage. This connection proves crucial, as the little lantern he carries is a key item to escaping from Otohime's castle. His relationship with his father is paramount, and he becomes intensely defensive of him, reacting strongly against anyone who shows disrespect. This trait leads to a rivalry with the character Shiro, with their conflict being described as a clash between a "father-complex duo" that other characters find both amusing and exasperating.

His key relationships are defined by opposition. His forced servitude to Ichiyo creates a tense, mutually antagonistic dynamic where the two cannot stand each other. Similarly, his hatred for Hakugo fuels his animosity. Yet, through his travels and forced proximity to these rivals, there are hints of development. The comedic nature of his intense devotion and his clashes with others suggest he gradually becomes more integrated into the group, even if reluctantly, with other characters noting that he becomes more endearing over time.

Regarding his abilities, Heikan is not defined by overwhelming combat techniques. His primary notable ability stems from his lineage; as a child of the Dragon King and Otohime, he possesses a small, specific lantern. This item serves as a mark of his heritage and is a necessary tool for those connected to Otohime and the Dragon King, granting passage where others cannot. His primary function and authority remain in his stated role as a manager of the gate.
