Description
Menel, also known as Meneldor, is a half-elf and a central character in the second season of the anime, serving as the closest companion to the protagonist, Will. His background is defined by a sense of not fully belonging to either side of his heritage. He was born to an elven mother and a human father he never knew, and he spent his early years raised among pure-blooded elves. In that community, he was always an outsider, his mixed blood making him a point of difference that eventually forced him to flee his home. After leaving the elven village, Menel found a new home and a sense of purpose in a human village that accepted him for who he was. This village became a place he was deeply dedicated to protecting.

Personality-wise, Menel initially presents as cynical and pragmatic, providing a sharp contrast to Will's natural optimism and compassion. He is often the first to ask about rewards or compensation for their adventures, and he is not afraid to rein in Will’s tendency toward self-sacrifice. This practicality, however, masks a deeper, more vulnerable history. His skepticism is not merely a character trait but a defense mechanism; he initially suspects that Will's kindness and piety must be an act or a result of sheltered privilege, as he finds it difficult to believe anyone could be genuinely and unwaveringly good. This core cynicism slowly dissolves as he witnesses Will's consistent and authentic dedication to helping others and bringing dignity to both the living and the dead. His arc moves from a guarded opportunist to a fiercely loyal friend who swears undying loyalty to Will for helping him turn his life around.

Menel’s primary role in the story is that of Will’s closest advisor, partner, and friend. Their relationship is that of equals who complement each other in nearly every way. In combat, they form a classic short-range and long-range duo, with Will fighting as a magic knight with swords and spears while Menel provides support from a distance with his expert archery. In terms of personality, Menel acts as the cynical foil who balances Will’s idealism, offering counsel and practical advice to temper his friend’s heroic impulses. The bond they form is a classic example of fire-forged friends, solidified after Will helps Menel cleanse his adopted village of demons and undead. This relationship is particularly poignant because of their differing lifespans. As a half-elf, Menel is long-lived and expects to outlive Will by centuries. He has made a conscious decision to live a human-like life, filled with the passion and brevity of a "flickering fire," rather than the detached, perpetual existence of an elf. As such, he has sworn to be there for Will's children and grandchildren after Will is gone, even acting as his friend's eventual gravekeeper to see what becomes of his legacy.

A key moment in Menel’s development occurs during the events at the village, where he confronts his own preconceptions about faith and goodness. Having been shaped by a harsh life, he is deeply moved by Will's genuine piety and service to the goddess Gracefeel. In a significant turning point, Menel asks Will to help him form a contract with Gracefeel, making her his guardian spirit. This act represents his final acceptance of a more hopeful and faithful worldview, having found a person he believes is worth following. This is part of a larger journey where Menel confronts the emotional walls he built after a difficult upbringing, learning to trust and find a family through his bond with Will. His development is not about gaining power, but about finding a place to belong and a purpose that transcends his own personal pain.

In terms of abilities, Menel is primarily an archer, specializing in long-range combat to support Will in battle. He is a skilled and practical fighter, and his tactical mindset makes him a valuable strategist for their various quests. As a half-elf, he possesses a lifespan far exceeding that of a human, which is central to his character's long-term outlook on life and friendship. With his new devotion to Gracefeel, he also gains a spiritual connection to the goddess, marking his growth from a cynical drifter into a man of faith. His adventures with Will eventually lead them to investigate mysterious happenings in the land, including a journey to the Rust Mountains, the capital of the dwarves, where they face a new prophecy and challenges.
