Description
Kenjirō Minami is a young Japanese figure skater and a recurring character in the anime. He is seventeen years old and stands at 155 centimeters tall, with a slim build. His appearance is distinctive, featuring blond hair with a bold streak of red and a noticeable canine tooth that often shows when he smiles.
Kenjirō comes from a medical family; his parents are both doctors, and his older brother is a medical student. Despite this academic background, Kenjirō has chosen to pursue a career in competitive skating. He has recently moved up from the junior ranks to the senior level and is already considered one of Japan’s most promising young athletes, sometimes referred to as the hope of the Kyushu region.
His personality is bright, energetic, and openly earnest. Kenjirō is depicted as being somewhat innocent and can become nervous in high-pressure situations, such as before a major skate. He has a habit of letting his emotions get the better of him, particularly when he is excited or in the presence of someone he greatly admires. This trait is most evident in his relationship with Yuuri Katsuki, whom he regards as his idol. Kenjirō is a devoted and vocal fan of Yuuri, having followed his career closely and even modeled his own short program costume on one of Yuuri's older, much to Yuuri's embarrassment. He takes every gesture from Yuuri to heart and is determined to one day compete with him on the world stage.
In the story, Kenjirō serves as a foil and a catalyst for Yuuri. He first appears in Yuuri's memory as the skater who defeated a slumping Yuuri at the All Japan Championship the previous year. They meet again in person at the Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu Championship, a qualifying event that Yuuri must win to return to the Grand Prix series. While Yuuri is initially too consumed by his own anxieties to acknowledge his fan, Kenjirō openly challenges him on the ice. He insists that Yuuri should not dismiss his past or his influence, leading to a pivotal moment where Yuuri begins to embrace his role as a senior skater and offers Kenjirō encouragement before his free skate. This interaction marks a key step in Yuuri's development, helping him move past his insecurities.
Throughout the competition, Kenjirō performs his free skate to a swing piece titled Minami's Boogie, earning a new personal best score of 214.97 and finishing in second place behind Yuuri. Later, he reappears at Yuuri's family's hot spring inn, Yu-topia Katsuki, joining the Nishigori triplets to form an enthusiastic cheer squad for Yuuri during the Grand Prix Final viewing party.
As a skater, Kenjirō is noted for his expressive and passionate performances that captivate an audience, rather than for technical mastery. While he is eager to attempt advanced elements, such as a quadruple jump, he has not yet successfully landed one in competition. His preferred music genres are swing and jazz, and he gravitates toward upbeat, lively routines. Kenjirō is coached by Kanako Odagaki, with whom he shares a relatively relaxed and almost maternal relationship.
