Description
Hugh the Dark Algernon III, also known as the Servamp of Pride and by the nickname Old Child, is a character who presents a striking contradiction between his ancient origins and his diminutive appearance. He is among the oldest of the Servamps, second only to Sleepy Ash in age, yet he physically manifests as a small child standing only two feet and six inches tall, or three feet and seven inches when including his signature top hat.

His outward form features short black hair, sharp red eyes characteristic of his vampire nature, and prominent fangs. His attire is deliberately grandiose and old-fashioned, designed to evoke the image of a classic, elegant vampire. He typically wears a black suit with red coattails, a black cape lined with crimson, a top hat, a monocle, and carries a cane. This elaborate gothic ensemble creates a notable contrast with his small stature, emphasizing the duality of an ancient being trapped within a youthful shell.

Before becoming a Servamp, Hugh was a wealthy, eccentric nobleman named Algernon III who lived a reclusive life in a castle. He was disliked by the local townspeople and had no visitors until a young boy named Hugh began to call on him. The boy gave him the nickname "the Dark," as Algernon never revealed his true name. Over time, Algernon's lonely final days were brightened by the boy's company. After Algernon died of old age, the grief-stricken boy was found wrapped in his black cloak. The Count, the creator of the Servamps, then approached the boy and granted his wish to revive the old man. Algernon’s soul was placed into the boy’s young body, transforming him into a vampire, while his own aged body was discarded.

As the Servamp representing the sin of Pride, Hugh's personality is dominated by immense arrogance. He considers himself the only true vampire and frequently lectures others by beginning statements with "A true vampire..." to explain proper vampiric behavior. Despite this dignified self-image, his pride often manifests in a manner that is childish and endearingly naive, largely due to his young appearance. He becomes easily distracted, loses focus during serious conversations when something like a meal or a soccer match captures his attention, and can exhibit petulant or demanding behavior. His speech patterns are noticeably old-fashioned, a remnant of his long life. Following a loss of power, his personality shifts dramatically as he adopts the demeanor of an elderly man complaining about back pain and memory lapses, though this is later revealed to be an elaborate act.

Hugh's primary motivation is maintaining his existence as a vampire of pride, which includes seeking out a human Eve with refined, "gourmet" blood. He also holds a deep-seated hatred for the Count, who manipulated him through the original boy's affection to become a Servamp, though he conceals this vengeful intent from his siblings.

In the narrative, Hugh first appears when he emerges from a coffin that his Eve brings to a festival. He later provides crucial information to the protagonist, Mahiru Shirota, and the main Servamp, Sleepy Ash, about the looming crisis involving Tsubaki, who has begun a countdown to the end of the world. Despite his attempts to deliver this grave news, he is easily sidetracked, creating a humorous contrast between his self-importance and his childish behavior. He is frequently well-informed about the state of affairs, using his network of subclasses to gather information.

His key relationship is with his Eve, Tetsu Sendagaya. Hugh was drawn to Tetsu after following the scent of his gourmet blood to a hot spring lodge. Mistaking him for a guest, Tetsu gave him a room and, when Hugh complained about the sunlight, simply nailed boards over the windows to block it out, an act that impressed the vampire with its straightforwardness. Tetsu gave him the name Hugh, by which he is now commonly known. While Hugh often calls his master a buffoon, he also depends on him for blood and accepts the care Tetsu provides, such as preparing meals and drying his hair. In turn, Tetsu places absolute trust in Hugh, believing that Hugh is always right.

As a Servamp, Hugh possesses several notable abilities. Like all his kind, he can transform into an animal, his chosen form being a small bat. He can also disperse his body into a swarm of bats to attack or overwhelm his opponents. In the anime adaptation, his Lead ability, used by his Eve Tetsu, is called Black Box, which summons a swarm of bats from his coffin for him to control in battle. His knowledge of the Servamp system and vampire history is also a significant asset, making him a valuable source of information.
