Description
Amane Himeno is a supporting character in the story who appears at a cosplay event held in an aquarium. His real name is Chitose Amano, and he is a twenty year old male university student. He is a cosplayer who specializes in crossplaying, which is the act of cosplaying as characters of the opposite sex. His appearance in his female cosplay is so impeccable that nearly everyone he meets initially mistakes him for a woman, a perception reinforced by his graceful mannerisms and authentic feminine speech patterns. However, when not in costume, he is described as a strikingly handsome young man, a contrast that often surprises those who know him only from his cosplay persona.

Amane’s personality is a blend of warmth and directness. He is kind-hearted, approachable, and empathetic, genuinely wishing to support others in the cosplay community. Despite his delicate and refined appearance, he possesses a strong inner confidence and is surprisingly bold and straightforward. He is not shy about changing clothes in front of others and speaks his mind without hesitation. This confidence stems from his personal journey, as he once disliked his own features for not being masculine enough. Through crossplay, he was able to transform into admired characters, which helped him build significant self-esteem and accept himself. His core motivation is the joy and authenticity he finds in his hobby; he views cosplay as a vital part of his identity and is unwilling to compromise it for anyone.

Amane’s role in the story begins when he encounters the protagonists, Wakana Gojo and Marin Kitagawa, at an aquarium cosplay event. After a minor wardrobe malfunction with his skirt hook, they come to his aid. Initially wary, he opens up to them when Gojo shows genuine interest in the technical aspects of his crossplay, specifically the makeup techniques used to conceal masculine features. He shares his expertise, offering Marin valuable advice on makeup and recommended shops, and in return finds acceptance and camaraderie. This friendship is significant, as it expands his previously solitary cosplay experience. He also develops bonds with other cosplayers, including Suzuka Ito and Sajuna Inui, further integrating him into the community.

Amane’s development is rooted in his past. He began crossplaying in his second year of high school after his older sister, noticing a broadcast of male comedians dressing as women, suggested he try it. His mother and sister were supportive, providing him with makeup tips and encouragement. A pivotal moment in his life occurred during university when a girlfriend discovered his hobby. She reacted with disgust and demanded he throw away his costumes. Faced with a choice, Amane firmly chose his passion for cosplay over the relationship, demonstrating the strength of his convictions and his commitment to being true to himself.

His notable abilities lie primarily in the art of transformation. He is an expert in feminine makeup, particularly skilled at covering beard stubble and other masculine tells. Unlike Gojo, who makes costumes from scratch, Amane typically purchases ready-made costumes and wigs, focusing his efforts on perfecting his presentation through makeup, posture, and mannerisms. His quality of work is considered so high that other cosplayers have expressed a willingness to pay simply to witness it. Later in the narrative, he also displays a protective instinct; after a magazine editor mistakes his online account for Marin’s and attempts to solicit a gravure photoshoot, he takes it upon himself to block the contact and delete any photos of Marin from his feed to shield her from unwanted attention, reinforcing his loyalty to his friends and his stance on keeping cosplay a hobby rather than a career.
