Description
Yuu Kusakabe, a student in Erika Shinohara's class, begins as an unconfident, shy outcast. He has brown hair, pale skin, and stands 170 cm tall. Habitually using his long bangs to hide his face, this stems from deep insecurity about his "girly" features, rooted in elementary school bullying where his pale complexion earned him the cruel nickname "ghost." His mother and sister voiced concerns about his chances of getting Valentine's chocolates or finding a girlfriend. Socially isolated, his quiet, timid nature made him nearly invisible to classmates until brief interactions during math book collection and a pivotal supermarket encounter. Struggling to find his wallet at checkout, Erika stepped in and paid for his groceries, surprising Yuu with her unexpected kindness. Outside, she moved his bangs aside, complimented his eyes, challenged his negative self-view, and encouraged him to show his face and build confidence, sparking their friendship and his gradual change.
Yuu developed romantic feelings for Erika due to her consistent kindness, motivating him to openly criticize Kyouya Sata's poor treatment of her despite his reserved nature. On Valentine's Day, sharing his family's melancholic worries prompted Erika to give him one of her homemade chocolates originally meant for Kyouya – an act Kyouya witnessed, causing tension. Later, when Erika was distressed after a conflict with Kyouya, Yuu prevented her from falling down stairs. He listened to her vent about Kyouya's true personality at a restaurant and seized the moment to confess his feelings and propose dating. Erika accepted a date to a water park, but there, she reaffirmed her feelings for Kyouya and rejected Yuu romantically.
Yuu accepted her decision gracefully, demonstrating maturity by warning Kyouya not to hurt Erika again. Post-rejection, he shifted focus towards personal growth, actively building confidence through small steps like greeting classmates and culminating in delivering a speech at his high school graduation ceremony, cheered on by Erika. This showcased substantial development from his earlier withdrawn self. While the anime centers on his unrequited feelings for Erika, the manga resolves his romantic storyline by depicting him eventually entering a relationship with Ryoku Edano.
