Description
Hailing from the ninja heritage village of Iga in Oedo, Kappei trained in swordsmanship at his grandfather Gen'unsai's kendo dojo. A ninja-themed play during Iga's Requiem Festival sparked his desire to learn ninjutsu, a wish Gen'unsai initially resisted, causing friction with those pressuring for change. Masked assassins, revealed as WNA agents, attacked Kappei and Gen'unsai, demanding the surrender of Gumchi, a gum-like alien guarded by their family for generations. Gen'unsai sustained injuries protecting Kappei during their escape to a hidden bamboo forest shrine. There, Gen'unsai unveiled their ninja lineage and introduced Gumchi, explaining its arrival centuries prior. When the attackers pursued them, Kappei refused to relinquish Gumchi. The alien transformed into a weapon, enabling Kappei to drive off the assailants. Gen'unsai then tasked Kappei with traveling to Komerika for training under granduncle Genryusai while protecting Gumchi. Kappei reluctantly departed.
In Komerika, Kappei joined Genryusai's training alongside students like Van and Berecca. His carefree, innocent nature occasionally causes humorous mishaps, like searching for his missing loincloth after Gumchi wore it as a hat, leading to a brief clash with Van. Kappei approaches ninja studies seriously, diligently reviewing scrolls and completing missions. Outside training, however, he often naps or goofs off. He communicates slowly, frequently reporting updates to Berecca long after she has already learned of developments.
Assigned to support Berecca on an intelligence mission in Oedo, Kappei attempted to refocus her on objectives when she chased an operative, though unsuccessfully. He provided remote guidance, sharing knowledge of Oedo and relaying Genryusai's messages, albeit with delays. During this mission, Kappei reunited with Gen'unsai. When attacked by a Lion Dance Car, Kappei deduced how Space Ninjas absorb power. After Berecca fought the machine, Kappei used Gumchi to demonstrate this absorption ability.
