ONA
Description
Gaia Nomura is a super-soldier and the leader of an elite mercenary group from Hokkaido who serves as a formidable opponent and later an ally to the protagonist. Known by the epithet Mr. War, Gaia is a man of short stature with a bald head, typically concealed by a light-colored bandana, a result of the intense trauma he endured. His real name is Nomura, and he suffers from dissociative identity disorder, a condition brought on by a near-death experience during the Ugandan Civil War. Captured and faced with a firing squad, Nomura experienced the ultimate fear, which caused him to lose all his hair and gave birth to the alternate, supremely confident warrior personality known as Gaia.
In his original form as Nomura, he acts as a medic for his unit and is described as relatively weak and prone to panic. However, when a dangerous situation triggers an adrenaline rush, the Gaia personality emerges. This alter ego is calm, composed, and possesses an immense, almost god-like confidence in his abilities on the battlefield. He is highly intelligent and relies heavily on psychological warfare, using manipulation and fear to break down his opponents before physically engaging them. Despite his usual composure, Gaia has shown moments of great rage when his tactics fail, such as during his fight with Baki Hanma. His core philosophy for combat is based on three principles: respecting one's body by giving it rest, freeing the body from the control of the conscious mind, and using every element of the surrounding environment as a weapon.
Gaia is first introduced during the Childhood Saga, where his mercenary unit captures a young Baki Hanma in the forests of Hokkaido. Initially, the unassuming Nomura taunts the captive Baki, but after Baki escapes and defeats the rest of the unit, Nomura is overwhelmed by fear and transforms into Gaia for their climactic battle. He fights Baki in the jungle, employing a terrifying array of techniques derived from nature, including using river water as blinding bullets, vines for lethal strangulation, and a piercing scream that disorients his opponent. Though he is a powerful and skilled combatant, Baki ultimately defeats him by cutting off the blood flow to his brain, forcing him into unconsciousness. After his defeat, Gaia honors the result, forming a friendly, comradely bond with Baki and sharing a meal with him and the rest of the mercenary squad.
Gaia holds a deep-seated and utter disdain for Baki's father, Yujiro Hanma, whom he dismisses as a mere thrill-seeker who fights only for pleasure. In an act of defiance before the battle between Baki and Yujiro, Gaia challenges the Ogre himself, though he loses miserably and sustains severe injuries. He later reappears during the Most Evil Death Row Convicts Saga, replacing Jack Hanma in a fight against the Russian convict, Sikorsky. In this encounter, Gaia demonstrates the full extent of his environmental mastery, using the sand, discarded teeth, and bone fragments from the underground arena floor as a weapon and camouflage to psychologically terrorize Sikorsky into submission without ever being touched. Over time, Gaia exhibits significant character development, becoming more balanced, cautious, and less reckless in his demeanor, eventually leaving the Japanese military to work as a personal bodyguard for the President of the United States.
Gaia's most notable ability is his conscious control over his own adrenaline. By manipulating its flow, he can dramatically amplify his strength, speed, durability, and senses to whatever level a situation requires, making himself a nearly unstoppable fighter. He is a master of guerrilla warfare, considered the undisputed king of jungle combat. His fighting style is purely pragmatic and military, designed to kill. He is proficient with various weapons, including knives which he can throw with deadly accuracy, and has even demonstrated the ability to tear apart a tank with his bare hands. His technical arsenal includes the Eardrum-Burster, a powerful shout designed to stun and deafen an opponent; the Water Bullet, a stream of water or a handful of sand and debris thrown at high velocity; and the Vine Art, which uses the environment to bind and suffocate an opponent. Despite his small and lean physique compared to other fighters in the series, his skill, strategic mind, and mastery of fear make him one of the world's deadliest soldiers.
