Description
Hitaki Kuze is the younger brother of Tsugumi Kuze, the protagonist of the anime Libra of Nil Admirari. He is a young boy who closely resembles his older sister, sharing her short brunette hair and bright green eyes. He comes from the noble Kuze family, and much of his upbringing fell to Tsugumi due to the frequent absence of their parents and their mother’s poor health, which created an exceptionally strong bond between the siblings.

In personality, Hitaki is generally cheerful, though he possesses a stubborn and persistent streak along with a noticeable sense of pride. He is deeply attached to his sister, behaving in a clingy and doting manner toward her, but he can become cautious, rude, and aloof around men he perceives as a potential threat to Tsugumi. This possessiveness stems from his reliance on her as his primary source of love and stability.

The central event driving Hitaki’s role in the story is his attempted suicide prior to the series’ beginning. He came into contact with a cursed tome, a Maremono that negatively influences its readers, leading him to attempt self-immolation. While his life was saved, he sustained burns and required hospitalization. This traumatic incident is the direct catalyst for Tsugumi joining the Imperial Library Information Assets Management Bureau, known as Fukurou, in her quest to understand what caused her brother’s actions. The attempted suicide was motivated by his distress over their father arranging a marriage for Tsugumi, which Hitaki viewed as selling her off for a loan.

Key relationships define his character. With his older sister Tsugumi, he is loving and possessive; after his failed attempt, he was overjoyed when she was finally allowed to visit him in the hospital. His relationship with his father, Viscount Masataka Kuze, is strained due to the arranged marriage and his father’s absence, though his father did show care by postponing the marriage after the incident. He also knows Yutaka Nabari, an acquaintance who once lived with the family, and he develops a close relationship with him, which makes him all the more terrified when he learns of Yutaka’s dark intentions. He is initially rude to Hayato Ozaki, a colleague of his sister, reflecting his general wariness of men around Tsugumi.

Over the course of the story, Hitaki shows development. After being discharged from the hospital, he leaps into his sister’s arms upon her return, and it is implied that he eventually accepts and supports her decision to continue her dangerous work with Fukurou. He is also a fan of the author Shizuru Migiwa and enjoys reading books, as well as making hot cakes with his sister and their steward. His name carries meaning, with Hitaki referring to a type of bird in Japanese, and his favorite tea is Ceylon.
