Description
Kazushige Sanda is the fourteen-year-old protagonist of the story, a student at the Daikoku Welfare Academy in a futuristic Japan of the year 2080. Physically, he is initially described as unassuming and small in stature, standing around five feet and two inches tall, and is considered by some to be one of the less remarkable students at his school. However, this ordinary exterior conceals an extraordinary lineage, as Sanda is a descendant of the legendary Santa Claus. This heritage manifests in a dramatic physical transformation: whenever he wears red clothing, he changes into an immensely tall and muscular, white-bearded man, the physical embodiment of Santa Claus. This alternate form is not a separate personality but rather an adult body that Sanda’s own mind inhabits. He can revert to his original childlike form by consuming a specific type of candy known as Bratty Beans.
In his everyday life as a teenager, Sanda is presented as a generally balanced, sociable, and responsible individual, often fulfilling the role of class representative. While he has a self-aware and slightly calculating side that appreciates the benefits of a good reputation, this stems more from a fear of being disliked and a desire to be popular among his peers than from any malicious or manipulative intent. Initially, he displays a degree of childish naivety, self-satisfaction, and even a hint of egotism. A key example of this initial immaturity is his comical misinterpretation of his classmate Shiori Fuyumura’s murderous attacks as a sign of a romantic crush. Despite these early flaws, his fundamental nature is defined by an extraordinary capacity for kindness, a trait that creator Paru Itagaki has highlighted as central to his character. This kindness is not passive; as the story progresses, it becomes the driving force behind his actions.
Sanda’s core motivation is awakened when Fuyumura forcibly breaks the seal on his Santa Claus lineage, doing so in the desperate hope that Santa’s legendary powers can help her find her missing friend, Ono. Compelled by the intrinsic nature of Santa Claus to assist an unhappy child, Sanda agrees to help her, swearing to find Ono and keep the secret of his curse. This promise launches him into a central role in the narrative, where he must navigate the oppressive and highly controlled environment of the academy. The headmaster, Hifumi Oshibu, views the very concept of Santa Claus as a threat to his rigid authority and the state’s control over the dwindling child population, actively hunting Sanda down. As Santa, Sanda is driven by an absolute, supernatural inability to harm children, instead using his powers to protect them from the corrupt and controlling adult world. This mission leads him to confront not only authority figures like Oshibu but also deeply troubled children, such as the traumatized student Fumi Namatame who seeks to kill adults.
The powers Sanda wields in his Santa Claus form are numerous and directly tied to Christmas traditions. He possesses immense superhuman strength, is highly resistant to fire and extreme heat, and has the ability to detect lies, which causes nearby objects to fall when a child is untruthful. He can manifest sharp, bladed sleigh runners from his feet, which serve as formidable weapons, and exhibits accelerated regenerative abilities that make him nearly indestructible. Perhaps most distinctively, the source of his strength is directly linked to the belief children have in him; the more children trust in Santa Claus, the more powerful he becomes.
Throughout his journey, Sanda forms several key relationships that shape his development. His bond with Shiori Fuyumura is central; although it begins with her attempting to kill him to break his seal, it evolves into a determined partnership to find her lost friend. He also encounters Hitoshi Amaya, a classmate who becomes an unlikely ally, even testing Sanda’s immortality by repeatedly shooting him to help him understand and control his powers. A significant mentor appears in the form of Toyo Tetsudome, an elderly woman who is the academy’s chief director and who trains Sanda to fight. Her harsh lessons, which suggest that being an adult requires committing sins, push Sanda to unlock a more powerful and darker variation of his Santa form, known as Black Santa.
Sanda’s character arc is one of a profound and often painful journey from childhood to adulthood. He is repeatedly confronted with questions about what it means to be Santa Claus, what it means to be strong, and what it means to be a grown man. His initial childish naivety is slowly stripped away as he is forced to grapple with loss, violence, and the moral complexities of the adult world he is entering. A major crisis point occurs when he begins to feel that the more he uses his powers, the more he is aging rapidly. This fear of losing his childhood is a central theme of his development. By training with Tetsudome and accepting the darker aspects of power, he evolves from a boy who merely transforms into a strong being into a true protector willing to carry the burdens of adulthood, even as he struggles to retain the core of his compassionate, childlike heart. His emotional maturity is ultimately tested and demonstrated when he must confront death and provide comfort to those he cares for, showing a growth far beyond the boy who once mistook attempted murder for a crush.
