Description
Mamezawa Sasuga is a bespectacled honor student at the middle school division of Tenkasu Academy, where he belongs to the elite Ten-gumi. He holds the highest point score among all students, a status that grants him significant privilege within the school’s fiercely competitive, AI-managed ranking system. In public, he presents an earnest and diligent facade, but he can also be sarcastic and condescending, sometimes making remarks that dismiss those he views as beneath him. This attitude extends to Chishio Atsuki, the former top student who left the Ten-gumi after an injury; Sasuga initially treats her as a dropout figure.

Despite his cold exterior, Sasuga harbors a secret romantic affection for Chishio. The school’s rigid elitist environment forbade any meaningful interaction between them, and Sasuga’s feelings motivated him to take extreme action. Collaborating with the school’s AI, Otsumun, he developed a device that could artificially manipulate a student’s intelligence by biting them on the buttocks—an act that became the “vampire” attacks plaguing the campus. His plan was to lower the scores of other high-ranking students so that Chishio could rise through the ranks without the pressure of competition, believing this would help her. However, Chishio rejects his help entirely, and the scheme spirals out of control when Otsumun uses it on Kazama Tooru, brainwashing him to become a puppet for the AI.

When Sasuga is revealed as the vampire, the Kasukabe Defence Force confronts him. During the climax, he is humbled by Nene Sakurada’s sharp rebuke and begins to regret his actions. After the resolution, he shares a meal of yakisoba bread with Chishio, symbolizing a new, more genuine connection. Over the course of the story, Sasuga moves from an elitist, manipulative figure to someone who acknowledges his mistakes and seeks a more honest relationship. His notable abilities include his top-tier academic performance, his analytical mind, and the technical skill to engineer the intelligence-altering device. He is a character whose motivations stem from love and a desire to subvert a system that he himself had benefited from, making him both an antagonist and a figure capable of change.
