Description
Hugo Lesseps is a Master from the world of the story, initially associated with the Dryfe Imperium and revealed to be a former member of the organization known as the Triangle of Wisdom. A significant aspect of Hugo's identity is the distinction between virtual avatar and real self. Within the game, Hugo's avatar is a young man with blue hair who typically wears a pilot's uniform. In reality, however, Hugo is a girl named Yuri Gautier, described as a pretty young woman with blonde hair. Born as the second daughter into a wealthy French family, Yuri had a father who was a prominent businessman and a mother who was a retired actress. The family was marked by the father's emotionally abusive behavior. After a particular incident that drove her older sister, Francesca, to leave home, Yuri's mother divorced her father and took Yuri with her. Haunted for years by feelings of regret and anguish over being unable to protect her mother or sister, Yuri eventually accepted an invitation from Francesca to enter the virtual world.
In terms of personality, Hugo consciously cultivates a public persona within the game. As part of an effort to emulate a knight, Hugo typically behaves in a very pompous and flamboyant manner, reminiscent of a chivalrous figure from fairy tales. Underneath this theatrical exterior, however, Hugo is revealed to be extremely determined to protect those who are seen as weak, particularly women, a drive that originates from the painful events of the past. Hugo is also fundamentally kind and friendly, having made a great impression on fellow members of the Triangle of Wisdom in a short period of time. A notable shift in behavior occurs following a defeat in the city of Gideon. After this event, the frequency of the knightly roleplaying drops significantly, and Hugo begins to behave more like the genuine self behind the character.
Hugo's motivations are deeply rooted in real-life family trauma and a desire for reconciliation. The primary reason for entering the game was to reconnect with Francesca, the older sister who had left home. This personal mission is complicated by the actions of a figure known as Mr. Franklin, who lied to Hugo and revealed a darker nature, yet Hugo continues to care deeply about this relationship despite the manipulation. The role in the story is multifaceted. Hugo is a Maiden Master, a designation for those who possess a specific type of powerful Embryo, which creates a connection with the protagonist, Ray Starling. Despite belonging to the Dryfe Imperium, which is positioned as an enemy nation, Hugo is not a straightforward antagonist. Early on, Hugo aids Ray in a quest to rescue children from a dangerous gang, demonstrating a heroic streak. Later, Hugo becomes a direct opponent during an event known as Franklin's Game in Gideon, where the mission shifts to attacking a city and aiding in a kidnapping, creating a conflict between the self-image of a knight and the actions being taken.
Key relationships shape Hugo's journey considerably. The bond with Ray Starling is a notable friendship, struck up quickly during the Gouz-Maise incident due to their similar natures as Maiden's Masters. Even though they end up fighting on opposing sides during Franklin's Game, they continue to think of each other as friends. In stark contrast, the relationship with Rook Holmes is intensely antagonistic. Following their encounter during the same event in Gideon, Hugo comes to consider Rook the person most hated in the entire virtual world, a sentiment that is entirely mutual. The relationship with Mr. Franklin is also critical; this figure is revealed to be Hugo's real-life older sister, Francesca, and the journey to reconnect with her is the core motivation for playing the game at all.
Development of the character is most evident in the gradual shedding of the performed knightly persona. The defeat in Gideon serves as a turning point where the elaborate act begins to fade, allowing more of the true personality, marked by a sincere desire to protect others, to come to the forefront. This internal conflict is highlighted by the awareness of the questionable nature of the actions taken during the attack on Gideon, which clash with the self-image of a heroic protector.
Notable abilities are centered on advanced piloting and a unique freezing power. Hugo holds high-ranking jobs within the pilot grouping, including Armored Pilot and High Pilot. Lower-ranked jobs include the foundational Pilot class, which grants a passive skill for operating vehicles and enhancing their status, and Mechanic, which is used for repairing and maintaining mechanical objects. Hugo's primary combat tool is a Magingear, a powerful robotic vehicle. The most distinctive ability is La Porte de l'Enfer, a skill from Hugo's Embryo, Cocytus. This ability progressively freezes a target's body. The effect is based on the target's kill count of creatures of the same type as themselves, with the percentage chance and amount of freezing each time being equal to that kill count, triggering at regular intervals. This makes it a particularly insidious and strategic power that punishes a target's past actions in combat.
