Description
Chūta Kokonose is a fourteen-year-old second-year student at Shirobori Middle School and the protagonist of the story. For as long as he can remember, he has been able to hear a voice that no one else can, a trait that has led his classmates and others to view him as a strange person who talks to himself. An orphan who lost his parents at a young age, Chūta lives with his aunt Mimi. Due to his aunt's poor housekeeping skills, he has become very skilled at cooking and other domestic tasks, even impressing his home economics teacher with his sewing ability.
Chūta is initially portrayed as having a negative and passive personality. This withdrawn nature stems from a traumatic childhood incident in which he blamed himself for an accident that resulted in the death of four of his friends, causing him to close himself off from others. As a result, he has few friends and struggles to open up to people. His journey throughout the story involves gradually regaining his self-confidence and learning to trust others through his work and relationships at élDLIVE. Despite his insecurities, he has a habit of cooking when feeling down and possesses a core of determination that surfaces when protecting others.
Chūta's primary motivation changes over the course of the narrative. Initially reluctant and unsure of himself, he is recruited to the space police force élDLIVE by a small blue alien named Chips. After being provoked by his classmate Misuzu Sonokata, he decides to take the entrance examination. During this test, he discovers that the mysterious voice he has always heard belongs to a small, white, symbiotic alien living within his body, a creature he later names Dolugh. Chūta is motivated to join élDLIVE to prove that he is not a burden and to find a purpose, gradually becoming more committed to protecting the universe from dangerous criminals alongside his partners. He often refers to his past self as something he dislikes, indicating a strong desire for personal change and growth.
In the story, Chūta serves as a newly appointed Rank 1 officer in élDLIVE's Division 2 at the Solar System District station. His role is that of a rookie learning the ropes of being a space policeman, often paired with his more experienced and initially cold classmate, Misuzu Sonokata. His primary function is to use his unique symbiotic bond with Dolugh to fight aliens and solve cases. Often underestimated due to his low rank and insecure demeanor, he repeatedly proves his worth by successfully resolving critical cases, thereby earning the respect of his colleagues. Throughout the series, he works with various divisions of the Solar System Bureau to combat space criminals.
Chūta's key relationships are central to his development. His most significant bond is with Dolugh, the Monitalien symbiote. They share a symbiotic bond where Dolugh acts as Chūta's SPH (Space Pheromone) organ, and only Chūta can hear his voice. The two are deeply connected, sharing physical sensations; if one is in pain, the other feels it, and if Chūta loses confidence, Dolugh's physical form fades. This relationship evolves from being a mysterious voice to a powerful partnership where Chūta visualizes attacks and Dolugh executes them. Another pivotal relationship is with his classmate and teammate, Misuzu Sonokata. Initially dismissive and harsh towards Chūta for what she perceives as his incompetence, she gradually begins to respect and care for him as he demonstrates his courage and clears her name during a difficult case. His relationship with his aunt Mimi is also notable, as she is his guardian, and he manages the household chores in her place. He also has a positive relationship with the chief of the Solar System Bureau, Laine Brick, who is a supportive superior.
Chūta undergoes significant development throughout the series. He starts as a deeply insecure boy, blaming himself for a childhood tragedy that left four friends dead. This trauma made him withdrawn and hesitant to form bonds with others. Upon joining élDLIVE, he slowly begins to emerge from his shell. A major turning point is saving Tateyan, which allows Dolugh to physically manifest for the first time. The voice actor for the character noted that learning to open his heart to others was Chūta's most significant area of growth, allowing him to act selflessly for the sake of others without regard for his own safety. By the story's second half, his first-person pronoun shifts from the more passive "boku" to the more assertive "ore," reflecting his growing confidence and maturity. While he remains somewhat insecure throughout, events such as almost losing Dolugh force him to find inner strength, and he shows noticeable improvement by the final episode.
Chūta's notable abilities are intrinsically linked to his symbiotic partner, Dolugh. Together, they can use a power called SPH (Space Pheromone), a type of energy typically used only by aliens. Dolugh functions as Chūta's SPH organ. By combining their powers and having Chūta visualize an attack while Dolugh executes it, they can perform powerful offensive maneuvers. As the series progresses, after Dolugh nearly dies and undergoes an upgrade, he gains wings and new abilities, further enhancing Chūta's combat capabilities. Dolugh, whose full designation is "Fourth Generation Monitalien Water-Planet-Compatible Drulebrit TYPE390," was created with the purpose of monitoring other planets. Their shared power relies on Chūta's mental state, as his lack of confidence can cause Dolugh to weaken or fade.
