Description
Prince Cecil has always found life terribly dull. Exceptionally gifted in every way, the heir to the throne navigates his days with a detached sense of boredom, unchallenged by the world around him. This monotonous existence takes an unexpected turn when he becomes engaged to Bertia, the daughter of the chancellor. On the day they meet, Bertia makes a startling confession: she is a reincarnated soul who remembers her past life as the antagonist of an otome game, and she declares herself the villainess destined to torment him and ruin the heroine’s future. Her grand ambition is to excel at being wicked so that Cecil will be forced to break off their engagement.
The setting is a standard romantic fantasy kingdom, complete with a royal court, noble families, and the implicit social rules of a game world. Cecil, initially amused by her bizarre proclamation, decides against annulling the engagement. Instead, he finds his new fiancée far too entertaining to discard. He makes it his personal mission to observe her every attempt at villainy, transforming his tedious life into a fascinating live experiment.
Bertia’s schemes, however, are consistently misguided and backfire spectacularly. Her efforts to act arrogantly, deliver cruel ultimatums, or flaunt her status somehow endear her to those around her rather than earning their contempt. What she believes to be a perfect villainous sneer is perceived as a charming smile, and her attempts at bullying only serve to help others. From Cecil’s analytical perspective, her earnest failures are a constant source of entertainment. The narrative follows this comedic mismatch of intentions and outcomes, where the prince meticulously records the observations of his clumsy, self-proclaimed villainess fiancée as she unknowingly charms the entire kingdom while trying to destroy her own reputation.
The story’s arcs focus on Bertia’s increasingly desperate and failed plots, Cecil’s growing genuine affection masked by his detached curiosity, and the gradual unraveling of the original game’s plot. Key narrative threads include the introduction of the game’s supposed heroine, who finds Bertia to be more admirable than antagonistic, and the public’s shifting perception of the eccentric couple. The prince, once bored by life, becomes wholly captivated by his fiancée’s misadventures, leading to a relationship built on a massive, endearing misunderstanding. The anime adaptation, produced by Ashi Productions, is directed by Junichi Yamamoto and features voice talents Yusuke Kobayashi as Cecil and Miyu Tomita as Bertia.
