Description
Chiron, known as the Archer of Black, is a central figure in the Great Holy Grail War of Fate/Apocrypha. His true identity is that of the renowned centaur sage from Greek mythology, a being originally born as a complete divine spirit. He is the son of the Titan Cronus and the goddess Philyra, a lineage that granted him immortality and immense wisdom from birth. However, his birth was an unloved one; his mother, horrified by his half-human, half-horse form, abandoned him and transformed herself into a linden tree.

In his life, Chiron overcame this lack of parental love to become the most famous teacher of heroes in Greek legend. His students included a veritable pantheon of legendary figures such as Heracles, Asclepius, the hero Castor, and the leader of the Argonauts, Jason. Most significantly for the events of Fate/Apocrypha, he was the beloved mentor and close friend of the great hero Achilles. His death came about through a tragic accident when he was struck by a poisoned arrow of the Hydra, an injury that caused him unbearable agony. Because he was immortal, he could not die from the wound, so he chose to renounce his immortality to escape the pain, a sacrifice that also cost him his full divinity. This act allowed him to eventually be summoned as a heroic spirit.

Chiron is characterized by a calm, gentle, and remarkably temperate personality, traits that make him an anomaly among the passionate and often volatile heroes of Greek mythology. He is respectful and courteous to all, whether ally or enemy, and never resorts to insults or arrogance. As a Servant, he embodies the archetype of a wise teacher. He is deeply committed to the growth and success of his master, Fiore Forvedge Yggdmillennia, offering constant, practical advice and treating her as a student to be guided rather than just a contractor to be served. He loves to teach, and his greatest source of pride is having helped mold the heroes of Greece. This pride is balanced by an awareness of his own limitations; he admits that chaotic or purely brute-force situations, where wisdom and strategy are useless, are his weakness.

Chiron’s primary motivation in the Holy Grail War is to reclaim the immortality he surrendered. He does not see this as a selfish wish born of regret or a desire for power, but rather as a way to regain the only gift and the only bond he ever received from his parents. It is a deeply personal wish to reconnect with his lineage, even if he is somewhat ashamed of its self-serving nature.

In the story, Chiron serves as the master strategist for the Black faction, a role he fulfills with exceptional tactical acumen and foresight. Using his skills, he can achieve a form of limited future sight, allowing him to coordinate battle plans and predict enemy movements with great accuracy. He is the cornerstone of the Black camp's efforts, providing not only strategic direction but also crucial support on the front lines. One of his most critical actions is intervening to prevent Saber of Black from using his Noble Phantasm against the enemy Rider, a fight that would have been futile and potentially disastrous. He also uses his medical knowledge, a gift from the god Apollo, to examine the homunculus created by the Black Caster, sadly determining its lifespan would be only a few years.

His most significant relationship is with his former student, Achilles, who is summoned as the Rider of Red. Chiron recognizes his pupil immediately, but the reverse is not true due to Chiron taking human form to conceal his identity. This confrontation is laden with deep emotion for Chiron. He is proud of the hero Achilles has become and feels both sorrow that they must fight as enemies and a deep-seated desire to test his own strength against the warrior he trained. His other key relationship is with his master, Fiore, for whom he develops a strong teacher-student respect. He even offers her counsel on a deeply personal matter, persuading her to transfer her family's magic crest to her younger brother, believing it to be the best path for her future happiness and independence.

Chiron’s development culminates in his final battle against Achilles. This is not merely a clash of enemies but the ultimate test between master and student. Despite being fatally wounded in their duel, Chiron does not hesitate. In his dying moments, he sheds his personal joy in the fight and fulfills his duty as a Servant, using his Noble Phantasm to deliver a precise, fatal blow to Achilles’s legendary heel, thereby nullifying his immortality. This final act is a masterstroke of both strategy and love, ensuring his student faces a fair fight while honoring his own role in the war.

As a Servant, Chiron possesses formidable abilities. His skill, Wisdom of Divine Gift, is exceptionally versatile, allowing him to demonstrate nearly any skill not unique to a specific hero with a proficiency of B to A rank. Under his master's consent, he can even grant these skills to other Servants. He is also a master of Pankration, an ancient Greek martial art that combines boxing and wrestling, making him highly dangerous in close-quarters combat despite his Archer class. His most notable ability is his Noble Phantasm, Antares Snipe. The embodiment of his legend as the constellation Sagittarius, this attack requires no preparation or true name invocation. At a moment's decision, a meteor-like strike is fired not from his bow, but from a star, guaranteeing a hit with immense power and precision. This attack is so fast that even Achilles could not dodge it, though it can only be used once per night. To avoid instant identification, he is summoned in a human form, which slightly reduces his physical parameters but does not hinder his peerless archery.
