Description
Nero Claudius, the Saber-class Servant at the heart of Fate/Extra Last Encore, is a reimagined version of the historical Roman emperor Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, portrayed as a young woman. She is the Servant of Hakuno Kishinami and a central figure in the Moon Holy Grail War, a deadly tournament held within the digital world of SE.RA.PH. Nero’s background is drawn from historical accounts of her life, including her ascent to the throne through her mother Agrippina’s schemes, her popularity with the Roman populace due to generous policies and public performances, and her eventual downfall amid rebellions. In the Fate universe, this history is reframed to emphasize her as a tragic figure rather than a tyrant, and she is summoned in her prime, before the full decline of her reign.

Personality-wise, Nero is flamboyant, egotistical, and deeply affectionate. She possesses immense self-confidence and a theatrical flair, viewing herself as an accomplished ruler and artist. She calls herself a genius and introduces herself as Emperor, often looking down on others and rushing ahead recklessly, yet she is also cheerful, openhearted, and simple-minded like a child. Her unconditional standard of judgment is beauty—she loves anything she deems beautiful and despises frugality, ruin, and rebellion. Beneath her haughty exterior lies a kind and generous nature toward her subjects and those she trusts, as well as a hidden self-doubt regarding her historical reputation. She suffers from chronic headaches due to a curse inherited from her past life, which can impair her mental skills.

Nero’s motivations are driven by a love for the arts and a desire for adoration and applause. She seeks to be recognized as the supreme artist and emperor, and her concept of justice revolves around the idea that all lives are beautiful. In Fate/Extra Last Encore, she is motivated by her unwavering faith in Hakuno’s potential to change the stagnated world of SE.RA.PH. Having waited for him for a millennium, she retains memories of a previous failure and is determined to help him reach the top and break the cycle.

Her role in the story is that of a loyal Servant and protector to Hakuno Kishinami, who is a Dead Face—an artificial being formed from the accumulated resentment of deceased Masters. Nero acts as his emotional anchor, guiding him through the layers of SE.RA.PH and fighting alongside him against other Masters and Servants. She shares a complex relationship with her Master, born from mutual necessity but growing into deep trust and affection. She also has a historical and ideological rivalry with Gawain, the Servant of Leonardo B. Harwey, representing fire and theatrical passion against solar discipline. She interacts with Rin Tohsaka, a resistance fighter who helps Hakuno, and later confronts Twice H. Pieceman, the observer at the Moon Cell’s core.

Throughout the series, Nero undergoes development from a lonely spirit trapped in the past, burdened by guilt and weariness, into a champion fighting for a new dawn for humanity. Her arc culminates in her reaffirmation of hope and her willingness to sacrifice for Hakuno’s future. She transitions from a being defined by her tragic history to one who embraces change and possibility.

Notable abilities include her preeminent sword skills and a well-balanced fighting strength. Her class skills include Magical Resistance at rank C, which is low for a Saber due to her own lack of magic resistance, and Riding, though she avoids chariots due to discomfort. Her personal skills are Imperial Privilege at EX, which allows her to temporarily acquire skills she asserts she has, such as Swordsmanship, Fine Arts, Charisma, and Military Tactics; Invictus Spiritus at A, a skill born from her final moments that grants an unconquerable spirit; and Headache Affliction at B, which hinders mental skill success rates. Her Noble Phantasm is Aestus Domus Aurea, the Golden Theater, an anti-formation great magecraft that recreates the Domus Aurea, a theater she designed in her lifetime. It functions similarly to a Reality Marble but is constructed on top of the world, weakening imprisoned opponents and allowing Nero to alter its structures and invoke her own rules. While the theater is deployed, she can use the sword skill Laus Saint Claudius, an attack that extols the maiden and her imperium.
