Description
Julius B. Harwey is a Master participating in the Moon Holy Grail War within the digital world of SE.RA.PH. He is the elder half-brother of Leonardo B. Harwey, the heir to the powerful Western European Plutocracy. Unlike his younger brother, who is considered the "light" of the Harwey family, Julius is the one who single-handedly manages its "darkness". His background is one of deep tragedy. Intended to be a "designer baby" and a worthy heir, he was deemed defective and incapable of producing profit while still in the womb. Abandoned by his family, he survived through sheer force of will, eventually rising to command the family's anti-terrorist assassination squad. To prove his worth, his childhood was forcibly taken from him; at the age of six, drugs were used to accelerate his body to adulthood. This life of service came at a great cost, as his physical body on Earth is nearly a corpse, kept alive through extensive brain modifications that connect him directly to the Harwey family's supercomputer, a process that has left him with no hope of a normal future.
In the story of Fate/Extra Last Encore, Julius appears not as a living Master, but as a lingering "Dead Face" trapped on the fifth floor of the dying Moon Cell. Having been defeated in a previous iteration of the Holy Grail War, his hatred and obsession have solidified into a vengeful spirit. His primary role is that of an antagonist, a relentless "homicidal maniac" who haunts the rain-swept, desolate cityscape of his stratum, preventing any other soul from reaching the ladder to the floor above. His motivation is a perversion of his original purpose. While he was tasked in life with clearing obstacles for his brother, his current existence is driven by a twisted grudge against the protagonist, whom he initially mistakes for the one who defeated him before. More profoundly, he embodies the very nature of a Dead Face: an entity formed from the grudges of countless defeated Masters, born only to kill and unable to save anyone or anything.
Personality-wise, Julius is cold, methodical, and utterly ruthless, a natural assassin honed by years of duty. He is a man of few words, carrying an air of somber and oppressive lethality. Despite his cruel efficiency, his core motivation is not born of malice or ambition, but a desperate need to fulfill a single, sacred promise made to the only person who ever showed him kindness: his stepmother, Alicia. It was she who asked him to protect the young Leonardo. Tragically, his "first performance test" as an assassin was a command from his own father to kill this same woman, a duty he carried out while listening to her final plea to care for her son. This paradox—saving his humanity by clinging to the dying wish of a woman he was forced to murder—is the engine of his existence.
His key relationships are defined by this past. His entire being is oriented around his brother, Leonardo, not out of familial loyalty or love born from shared experience, but as a fanatical devotion to a ghost's request. His Servant is the legendary Chinese martial artist, Li Shuwen, who appears in the Berserker class in Last Encore. They share a grim commonality as beings who take lives, though Li Shuwen's more boisterous and honorable nature contrasts sharply with Julius's silent, brooding demeanor. The protagonist, Kishinami Hakuno, is his mortal enemy, not just as an obstacle to his brother's success, but as a mirror. He resents that Hakuno, another ordinary person, is able to challenge him and see through him, forcing him to confront the futile nature of his own obsession.
Julius does not undergo a positive development in the traditional sense. Instead, his arc in the anime is one of release. As a Dead Face, he is an unchanging, static being of resentment, incapable of growth or salvation. His final confrontation with Hakuno forces him to confront the truth of his existence. Upon his ultimate defeat, he is released from his agonizing, immortal half-life, finally allowed to let go of the promise and the hatred that have defined him for so long. As a Master, his abilities are unique. He is not a Wizard in the traditional sense but a highly skilled Spiritron Hacker. Connected to the Harwey supercomputer, he can perform powerful Code Casts that manipulate the rules of the arena, such as sealing an opponent's commands. He can also lock down areas and forcibly teleport other Masters into kill zones for his Servant. In Last Encore, his status as a Dead Face grants him superhuman resilience and physical power, allowing him to fight directly and manifest a reality-altering space dedicated to his vengeance.
