Description
Kensuke Achiwa is a central figure in the twenty-first film in the Detective Conan series, serving as the primary antagonist. He is an older man, estimated to be in his sixties, residing in Osaka. By profession, Achiwa is the wealthy owner of a successful real estate business, having earned a reputation as the real estate king of Naniwa. Beyond his commercial endeavors, he holds the position of president of the Satsuki-kai, a karuta group, and also acts as a reader for the annual Satsuki Cup tournament, a role he prefers over being a player.
Achiwa's deep involvement in the world of karuta is rooted in his past. He was a passionate player and it was through the game that he met Satsuki, the woman who would become his wife. His devotion to his wife is the defining feature of his personality and the primary driver of his actions. On the surface, Kensuke Achiwa appears as a charismatic and commanding leader, a man of influence who is accustomed to directing others and being obeyed. This outward persona is that of a composed and manipulative individual, capable of hiding his true intentions behind a calm facade. However, this exterior masks a deeply broken man whose entire existence is centered on protecting the memory and honor of his late wife, Satsuki.
The tragic chain of events that defines Achiwa's role in the story began five years prior. A rival grandmaster, Shikao Nagoro, challenged Satsuki to a decisive karuta match. In a private pre-challenge, Nagoro defeated Satsuki, who, in a fit of despair and anger, struck him with a radio, causing his death. Achiwa arrived to find the scene, and with the help of his secretary, Togo Kaieda, he chose to cover up the incident, hiding Nagoro's body. Satsuki never recovered from the trauma and passed away from an illness two years before the events of the film. Since her death, Achiwa's sole motivation has been to keep her name and reputation unsullied, a goal he is willing to commit terrible acts to achieve.
When a blackmailer, Toshiya Yajima, discovers evidence linking the Satsuki-kai's karuta deck to Nagoro's disappearance, Achiwa feels his wife's legacy is threatened. His plan becomes the central conflict of the story. He orchestrates a series of bombings and murders, using his secretary as an unwitting accomplice to carry out his orders. Achiwa intends to eliminate Yajima, as well as several karuta players whose unique playing styles could expose the evidence on the special deck of cards. His ultimate scheme is to destroy the hall where the murder occurred, incinerating all physical evidence, including Nagoro's hidden body, and to commit suicide in the final explosion, framing a dead man for a fabricated revenge plot.
His key relationships are central to his identity. His bond with his wife, Satsuki Achiwa, is a twisted form of devotion that has curdled into a destructive obsession after her death. He also has a significant relationship with his secretary, Togo Kaieda, who is an old acquaintance from Hong Kong. Achiwa manipulates Kaieda, using him to handle his less legitimate business affairs and to carry out the bombings, all while planning to kill him as well for knowing too much. Other important connections are defined by his scheme: his rival Nagoro, and the intended victims Yajima, Koji Sekine, and Momiji Ooka, all of whom Achiwa sees as threats to be neutralized.
In terms of development, Achiwa undergoes a process of revelation rather than change. He begins as a respected public figure, but as the investigation by Conan Edogawa and Heiji Hattori progresses, his elaborate plan is dismantled and his tragic, violent backstory is brought to light. In the end, cornered and exposed, his mask of a charismatic leader falls away to reveal his true, broken nature, leading to his confession and arrest. His notable abilities are not physical but intellectual and social; he is a charismatic and skilled manipulator, a convincing liar, and possesses the strategic mind to devise a complex, multi-stage plot while maintaining a perfect alibi. He also has a commanding presence and a deep, practical knowledge of karuta, both as a former player and as a reader, which he uses to great effect in his criminal scheme. He speaks in the Kansai dialect, reflecting his Osakan origins.
