Bodo Wolf

Description
Bodo Wolf was a renowned German actor and voice artist, whose extensive career spanned several decades until his death in 2023. Born on August 18, 1944, in Halle, Germany, he initially trained as a stage actor at the Staatliche Schauspielschule in Berlin and performed in various theaters, including the Gerhart Hauptmann-Theater Görlitz-Zittau and the Staatstheater Dresden. He appeared in numerous film and television productions in East Germany, notably in DEFA fairy tale films such as Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot and Der Prinz hinter den sieben Meeren. After relocating to West Germany, he continued his on-screen career with roles in popular series like Liebling Kreuzberg.

However, it is his prolific work as a voice actor for which he is best known. From the 1990s onward, Wolf became one of the most sought-after and recognizable voices in German dubbing, lending his distinctive voice to a vast array of international stars and iconic characters. He was the regular German voice for actors such as Christopher Walken, Richard Jenkins, Alan Alda, and, for a time, Robin Williams. He famously dubbed Tony Shalhoub as the obsessive-compulsive detective in the series Monk and Bryan Cranston as the bumbling father Hal in Malcolm mittendrin. Among his most celebrated roles was that of the villain Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) in the Saw film series, a part he voiced from the first film until his final performance in Saw X, which was released posthumously. He also provided the German voice for the Joker in the Batman: Arkham video game series, earning acclaim for his interpretation.

In the realm of anime and animation, Bodo Wolf was an equally active and significant presence. As you noted, he voiced Chief Daisuke Aramaki in the Netflix anime series Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. His extensive anime filmography demonstrates his remarkable range, encompassing a wide variety of characters. He voiced the sinister wizard Babidi in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Z Kai, the elderly hunter Peggy in Hunter x Hunter (2011), and Professor Weisz in Edens Zero. He took on roles in acclaimed series such as Attack on Titan The Final Season as Jäger, Fairy Tail as King Toma E. Fiore, and Parasyte -the maxim- as a professor. His other anime credits span decades and include Astro Boy (1980), Detective Conan (in multiple films), Elfen Lied, Spriggan, and Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale. Beyond Japanese anime, he also voiced the character Fung in the German version of the American animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Bodo Wolf's contributions to the world of dubbing and audio drama were immense. He also voiced the character of Bernhard Blocksberg, the father of the titular young witch, in the long-running and beloved German audio drama series Bibi Blocksberg from 2007 onwards. Even after officially retiring in 2022, he returned to voice Jigsaw one last time, a testament to his dedication to his craft. Bodo Wolf passed away on November 24, 2023, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important and cherished voices in German audio-visual media.
