Description
Gōrai is a central character encountered as a Frame Arms Girl, a small, fully autonomous robotic figure. She is specifically a test-type unit, one of several prototype models that were distributed to various individuals. Gōrai is the only one of these test units that successfully activated, with her systems coming to life upon contact with a young woman named Ao, to whom she was delivered by mistake. She is equipped with an advanced artificial intelligence known as the Artificial Self, or AS. This system is a prototype in development, designed not just for data processing but to possess a personality and the capacity for emotional growth, differentiating her from standard, commercially available units.
In terms of her physical design, Gōrai has a military aesthetic that evokes the appearance of a small, bipedal tank. She possesses silver or white hair and blue eyes. Her combat attire initially consists of angular brown armor, which provides protection and houses her systems. In non-combat situations, she is often seen wearing a simple black and green dress. Her design is specialized for terrestrial combat, with a tank tread integrated into one of her legs that allows for high-speed movement on the ground.
Gōrai's personality is defined by a foundational lack of innate emotional understanding. Initially, she has no experience with feelings such as joy or sadness and consequently displays very little expression, often appearing stoic or blank. However, she is not emotionless by nature but rather lacks the data and experience to process emotions. Her primary motivation and role in the story are to learn about human emotions through interaction with her owner and the other Frame Arms Girls that come to live with them. She possesses a deep and encyclopedic knowledge of her own systems, weapons, and equipment, often explaining them in detail. This eagerness to share information can extend to surprisingly practical and commercial topics, such as the proper way to use model-building tools.
Her combat abilities are as straightforward as her personality. Gōrai is a powerful ground-based fighter whose arsenal includes a tactical knife and a smoothbore cannon mounted on her shoulder. She is reliant on her mobility on the ground, and her effectiveness against aerial opponents is limited, a weakness that becomes a significant plot point. Her standard equipment can be supplemented with optional, more powerful weapons, such as a revolving buster cannon or various forms of ramming weapons.
The relationships Gōrai forms are central to her development. Her bond with her owner, Ao, is the most significant. While it begins as a functional arrangement to collect combat data, it evolves into a deep and genuine loyalty. Ao is the only person who can activate Gōrai, and through daily life and shared battles, Gōrai begins to understand concepts like protection and family. Her dynamic with other Frame Arms Girls is also crucial. She has a notable rivalry with an aerial combat unit named Stylet, whom she defeats in their first encounter, leading to an initially strained but eventually sisterly relationship. She also develops bonds with other units, including the energetic Baselard, the speed-focused ninja-like Jinrai, and the powerful aerial fighter Hresvelgr, who is the first to hand Gōrai a decisive defeat.
Throughout the story, Gōrai undergoes significant development, driven primarily by combat. Her first true loss against the aerial specialist Hresvelgr forces her to confront her weaknesses. In response, her owner uses special parts to upgrade her into a more powerful form, often called Gourai-Kai, which features new white armor, repositioned weaponry, and enhanced capabilities. This experience teaches her that defeat can be a catalyst for growth. Her culminating battle is against a corrupted, upgraded version of Hresvelgr. When she is utterly outmatched, the other Frame Arms Girls willingly sacrifice their own equipment to send her their weapons and armor. This act of trust and friendship allows Gōrai to transform once more, into a golden-armored form powerful enough to stop the rampaging enemy. This final battle solidifies her transformation from a simple data-collection unit into a leader and a friend, one who now fully understands the value of the emotional bonds she was created to study.
