Description
Mercenaire is the male protagonist of the story, a member of the Beastfallen, a race of individuals born with animal features due to a curse. He has the appearance of a large, imposing white tiger, yet this fearsome exterior belies a much more complex inner world.
His background is one of hardship and prejudice. Having grown up as a Beastfallen in a world where both his kind and witches are hunted and feared, he learned from a young age to be wary of others. For a time, he worked at a tavern with his parents until the age of thirteen, which is where he developed his surprising skill for cooking. After leaving that life, he became a mercenary, a profession that gave him his name. His combat prowess was such that, by the age of seventeen, he single-handedly annihilated an entire enemy unit, earning him the fearsome nickname Black Death Hunter, a memory he does not look back on fondly.
Mercenaire's personality is defined by a sharp contrast between his brutish appearance and his prudent, cautious nature. He is gruff, quick to complain, and deeply distrustful of witches, as they are responsible for creating the Beastfallen and are often the ones who place bounties on their heads. This cynicism is a defense mechanism forged by a lifetime of rejection and danger. However, beneath this rough exterior lies a kind and honorable individual with a gentle heart. He dreams of a simple, peaceful life, hoping to one day open his own tavern. This dream fuels his deepest motivation: to become human. His hobby and talent for cooking is a key expression of this softer, domestic side.
At the start of the story, Mercenaire is hired to hunt witches, but his life takes a turn when he is rescued by a powerful witch named Zero. She offers him a deal he cannot refuse: he will become her bodyguard and assist her in locating the Grimoire of Zero, a powerful spellbook that could destroy the world. In exchange, she will use her magic to turn him into a human. This agreement sets him on his central role as the protector and straight man to Zero, serving as her escort, housekeeper, and guide to the outside world, which she knows little about.
His most significant relationship is with Zero. Initially, he fears and distrusts her as a witch, but their forced companionship develops into a deep and genuine bond. He tolerates her eccentricities and her habit of sleeping on his furry stomach, and he grows to respect her. By the end of the story, their relationship is such that Zero offers him her true name, the highest form of intimacy a witch can grant, which he politely declines, content to remain her Mercenary and for her to remain his Zero. He also develops a protective, if often exasperated, relationship with the young mage Albus, who joins their party.
Over the course of the journey, Mercenaire undergoes significant development. He begins as a man who only wishes to be human to escape persecution. He is forced to confront his own prejudices as he works alongside Zero and other witches, learning that not all are evil and that humans can be just as monstrous. His ultimate development comes when he is forcibly transformed into a human by Zero to protect him. Instead of finding happiness, he feels powerless and useless, unable to protect his friends. After a series of events, including a pact with a demon, he willingly asks to be turned back into a Beastfallen, finally accepting that his identity and strength lie in his bestial form, not in a human one.
As a fighter, Mercenaire is exceptionally skilled with a massive sword, and his physical abilities are considered nearly unmatched in a world of magic. His combat style is direct and brutal, honed from years of survival as a mercenary. Even without any magical abilities of his own, he proves to be a formidable warrior capable of standing against sorcerers and soldiers alike.
