TV-Series
Description
Hatori Shikishima is a young elementary school girl who becomes a Dream of Alice, an individual who manifests supernatural abilities from a dimension known as Wonderland. She first appears in the latter half of the anime series as a significant character whose actions drive the final story arc.
Hatori comes from a troubled home environment characterized by significant parental pressure and conflict. Her parents frequently argue, often placing the blame on Hatori for her perceived failures, particularly her inability to gain admission to a prestigious private elementary school. This constant criticism and the tense atmosphere at home lead her to believe that she is the root cause of her family's unhappiness. She internalizes these feelings, becoming a sad and withdrawn child who desperately wishes for her parents to be kind to each other and to her, as they were in the past.
Her deep-seated wish to make her parents happy is the catalyst that awakens her Dream of Alice power. At first, she does not realize she has an ability. She only notices that her parents begin acting lovingly toward her whenever she expresses a desire for them to be happy. With the help of her best friend, Ayumu Miho, she discovers that her power manifests as a form of mind control or absolute command. By giving a verbal order, Hatori can force anyone around her to obey, and they will do so without realizing their will has been overridden. She and Ayumu initially treat this discovery with childlike excitement, using the power to play pranks and misbehave at school.
However, the carefree use of her ability quickly reveals a terrifying consequence. The effect of her commands becomes permanent and cannot be undone. People under her influence for too long lose all free will and personality, becoming lifeless, gray, zombie-like shells. When this happens to her own parents, Hatori is filled with despair and comes to see herself as an evil witch, a label she embraces based on a fairy tale she knows. Overwhelmed by guilt and a desire to stop herself from causing more harm, she runs away from home with Ayumu.
In her despair, Hatori takes on the role of an antagonist. She uses her powers on a large scale, freezing the wills of nearly everyone in a public area, including the florist Zoroku Kashimura, the central father figure of the series. Her actions provoke the anger of the series' protagonist, Sana, a powerful Dream of Alice who is immune to Hatori's commands. The two girls confront each other, but their powers inexplicably cancel each other out, leaving neither able to affect the other directly. Following this encounter, a vengeful Sana kidnaps Hatori and transports her to Wonderland, the dream-like origin of her own powers, and the two become trapped there together.
Hatori's most significant relationship is with her best friend, Ayumu Miho. Ayumu is consistently supportive, helping Hatori understand her powers and standing by her even when she decides to run away. She serves as Hatori's emotional anchor and is the one person Hatori truly trusts not to abandon her. Her relationship with Sana begins with conflict and antagonism, as Hatori freezes Sana's guardian and Sana retaliates by trapping her. However, being trapped together in Wonderland forces them to cooperate to find a way home, and they eventually form a bond, deciding that they want to be friends when they escape.
Through this ordeal, Hatori undergoes significant character development. Initially a fearful girl who blames herself for her family's problems, she becomes someone who must take responsibility for her actions. After being rescued from Wonderland, she accepts that she must face the consequences, including going to the police, and expresses shock and relief upon learning that her parents had been searching for her every day. With the help of Sana, Zoroku, and Ayumu, she begins to reintegrate into society. In the end, she is able to go to school as a normal girl, having gained not only a new friend in Sana but also a more hopeful outlook on her own life.
