Description
Free De La Hoya is a prominent character who first appears as the leader of the Spanish team BC Sol. Known as a legendary blader and a member of the elite group called the Big Five, he was once considered the world's number one blader. His journey includes a brief departure from BC Sol to join the American team, the Raging Bulls, before eventually returning to Spain to reclaim his role as the leader of BC Sol. His appearance is distinctive, featuring spiked and messy orange hair with a red streak, and dark eyes where his pupils are often not visible. He dresses casually, typically in a loose yellow tank-top and light brown jeans, and wears a long, dark teal fingerless glove on his left arm fastened with a belt and buckle.

Free’s personality is defined by a marked laziness and a carefree attitude, which stems from his overwhelming skill as a blader. He often appears bored or uninterested because he rarely encounters a challenge that excites him. This demeanor can come across as sarcastic or rude, as he is known to ignore his teammates or make slighting remarks to opponents. Despite his laid-back nature, he possesses a keen intellect and a deep understanding of Beyblade strengths and weaknesses, which he occasionally uses to offer precise advice to other bladers. Interestingly, he has a noticeable fondness for animals, particularly a deer he often encounters at his secluded training spot in a forest, where he shows a warmer and more genuine smile. Beneath his lazy exterior, Free is incredibly fit and athletic, capable of intense physical exertion such as running one hundred sprints without tiring, demonstrating that his casualness is a choice rather than a limitation.

Free's motivations are deeply tied to his identity as a powerful blader. Initially, he is driven by a search for a worthy opponent, having grown complacent as the world's top blader. His first loss to Lui Shirosagi serves as a crucial turning point, teaching him the importance of respect and pushing him to train harder to regain his title. His role in the story is multifaceted. In Beyblade Burst God, he serves as a formidable rival and a mentor figure. He recognizes the potential in the protagonist, Valt Aoi, and believes Valt can help improve BC Sol, which is one of his reasons for leaving the team. He later forges a deep bond with Valt, training with him and ultimately forfeiting their match in the International Blader's Cup due to a severe injury in his right arm, an injury caused by the immense power he pushed himself to unleash. He returns in subsequent series, continuing to evolve as a blader, helping Valt master new techniques, and facing new threats like the dark power of Phi, which leads to the destruction of his Beyblade, Geist Fafnir.

Key relationships define much of Free's development. His childhood bond with Kristina Kuroda, BC Sol's manager, is one of his longest and most significant; she is one of the few people who truly cares for his well-being. His rivalry with Lui Shirosagi is intense, marked by a humiliating defeat and a subsequent victorious rematch where Free reclaims his title as the number one blader. His relationship with Valt Aoi evolves from one of indifference to mutual respect and friendship, with Free acting as a mentor whose loss to Valt (via forfeit) is a testament to the growth he inspired. A small but crucial moment in his development is when he finally shakes hands with a blader, Shasa Guten, an act he had never done before, signalling a newfound respect for his fellow competitors.

Free’s abilities are as formidable as his reputation suggests. He is a tactical genius with incredible observational skills, able to analyze and counter an opponent's strategy almost instantly. His primary Beyblades are from the Fafnir line, known for their left-spin and energy-absorbing capabilities. During the events of Beyblade Burst God, he wields Drain Fafnir F3 8 Nothing. His signature special move, Drain Spin, allows Fafnir to absorb the power of an opponent's attack, converting it into speed and power for himself while damaging the other Bey. Another powerful technique is Nothing Break, where the downforce from his launch pushes the driver of his Beyblade flat against the stadium, causing it to stick in the center and deflect attacks before unleashing a massive burst of speed and force. He is also credited as the first blader to effectively utilize a "low-speed shoot" and "low-speed burst" techniques. Over the course of the series, his Beyblade evolves into advanced forms such as Geist Fafnir and Mirage Fafnir, each with new abilities like Geist Spin and Absorb Break, showcasing his continuous growth and adaptation as a blader.
