Description
Decky originates from the creature world, an alternate dimension that exists alongside the human realm. He arrives on Earth as an animated deck box during a period of dimensional imbalance, seeking a Duel Master to address the growing instability and the increasing number of rogue creature spirits finding their way into the human world. Upon meeting Joe Kirifuda, Decky forms a pact with the boy, becoming his companion and serving as his primary link to the world of creatures.
Physically, Decky resembles a small, white and black deck box with a visible face and a distinctive red bowtie. He can sprout arms and legs when necessary but often chooses to pose as an ordinary, inanimate deck box to hide his sentience. After Joe names the newly discovered civilization of creatures "Jokers," a permanent green letter J appears on Decky's body, marking their shared journey and this new aspect of the creature world.
Decky possesses a personality defined by high energy and a deep, encyclopedic knowledge of the Duel Masters game. He frequently guides Joe, explaining the rules, the nature of different civilizations, and the history of duelists who came before. However, he can also be volatile and morally ambiguous. His actions are initially driven by a harsh, pragmatic belief that a true Duel Master must face extreme challenges that break through any comfort zone, similar to how previous generations of duelists dealt with major crises. This philosophy leads him to force Joe into dangerous "True Duels" against Duel Warriors, where the loser sustains real physical harm. Decky initially advocates for lethal outcomes, believing that defeating a rogue spirit is the most effective solution, a stance rooted in his creature-world ethics where the primary goal is to prevent spirits from lingering in the human realm. Over time, Joe's more compassionate and humanistic influence moderates these extreme impulses, and Decky learns to disapprove of using deadly force against creature spirits under the guise of justice.
Decky's central role in the story is as Joe's mentor, ally, and a living conduit to the creature world. He withholds critical information at times, not out of malice, but from a conviction that Joe must discover his own potential and confront his destiny as a Duel Master. Despite this, he is deeply loyal and gradually transitions from a secretive observer to an active guardian of both the human and creature worlds. His key relationships are primarily with Joe, whose growth he comes to respect and champion, and with various masters of the different civilizations, such as Kabu Toki of Nature and Cap of Water, who help him unlock new abilities. Decky also holds great admiration for Joe's father Katta and his uncle Shobu after learning about their legendary dueling feats from the Kirifuda family archives.
Decky's most notable ability is to materialize creature cards from Joe's drawings. This process, however, has significant limitations. He is initially unable to create dragon-based cards, as dragons have been wiped out and exist only as legends in his world. The "Joker" cards he generates are often unpredictable, prone to malfunctioning or demanding unconventional payment for their services. Beyond creation, his abilities include swallowing a card to send its corresponding creature spirit back to its own world, transporting a person to the creature world if they insert their legs into his mouth, and analyzing whether a spirit is naturally born or artificially created based on subtle behavioral cues. By processing photographs, he can also revisit the memories of past duelists, although this ability has a time limit.
Throughout his journey, Decky undergoes considerable development, both in his moral compass and his power. As Joe resolves conflicts across different civilizations, Decky gains new marks that expand his abilities. After Joe helps heal the creature Bad Brand, Decky earns the mark of the Fire Civilization, allowing him to create Fire Jokers. Later, his interactions with masters in the Nature and Water civilizations grant him the power to produce Nature Jokers, Water Jokers, and "Gacharange" creatures, which allow him to upgrade existing creatures like Johnny and Joragon. His growth culminates when he finally overcomes his core limitation, managing to produce a dragon from one of Joe's drawings, albeit in a weakened state, signifying his deep bond with Joe and his evolution from a strict enforcer of cosmic rules to a compassionate partner who helps maintain the balance between worlds.
