Description
Haru is a character from the second season of the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS, where he serves as a secondary antagonist working in service of the powerful Ignis known as Lightning. He is introduced as a mysterious young boy who appears alongside a larger, more formidable figure named Bohman, whom he refers to as his older brother. In truth, their relationship is more complex, as Haru is an artificial intelligence, a second-generation AI created by Lightning. Unlike Bohman, who represents a later and more advanced generation, Haru was designed as a prototype, a vessel intended to house the Ignis, but his reasoning was ultimately deemed imperfect. Instead of being erased, he was given the role of serving as Bohman's guide and caretaker, tasked with teaching him how to duel and protecting him on his journey.
In terms of appearance, Haru's avatar in the LINK VRAINS world is that of a seemingly young boy with bright orange and yellow eyes. His hair is a blend of yellow with prominent orange and red highlights, including distinct diamond-shaped sections on his temples. He wears an elaborate outfit consisting of a dark blue shirt, a white blazer with yellow accents, an oversized red star on his collar, and orange pants. Later in the series, his avatar changes to a more ornate, military-style coat with green shoulder pads and red gauntlets, a design that aligns him visually with other members of Lightning's organization.
Haru's personality is a study in contradiction, blending a youthful and often pleasant demeanor with a deep-seated resentment and a calculating, unscrupulous nature. While he can appear utterly loyal to Bohman and Lightning, he frequently shows frustration and anger towards his designated role, feeling that he is looked down upon as an inferior, failed prototype. He openly expresses annoyance at having to constantly watch over Bohman and perform what he considers thankless labor. Haru is also shown to be untrustworthy, such as when he does not uphold his end of a wager after losing. Despite his childlike face, he does not act childish, instead displaying a weary and cynical understanding of his place as a tool for others. However, this resentment masks a genuine, if confused, affection for Bohman. Over time, he comes to realize that he truly does care for his "brother," understanding the meaning of their bond only after his final defeat.
Haru's primary motivation stems from his created purpose. While he outwardly works with Bohman to recover what they believe are lost memories, his core function is to facilitate Lightning's grand plan, which involves using Bohman as the ultimate vessel to surpass humanity. Haru struggles with his own identity, believing himself to be a lowly and disposable prototype, and his actions are driven by a desire to fulfill his duty while grappling with feelings of inadequacy and a wish to be seen as more than just a tool. In his final duel, he accepts a mission he knows he will likely lose, seeing it as an opportunity to finally escape his painful existence, stating he would be thankful to never see Bohman again.
Within the story, Haru acts as the ever-present support for Bohman, observing his duels from the sidelines and intervening to rescue him when he is defeated. He is instrumental in the antagonists' plan, having coded an anti-Ignis program into Bohman to protect him from being consumed by other AI, and he is able to bypass the restricted areas of LINK VRAINS to escape with his wounded brother. His most significant solo role comes when he is ordered by Lightning to duel Blue Maiden. The purpose of this duel is not to win, but simply to stall for time while Bohman completes his evolution, revealing how little his master values his survival.
His key relationships are all defined by his artificial nature. He was created by Lightning, who manipulates him by assigning him the designation of "brother" to control Bohman's emotions. His relationship with Bohman is the most complex; though he resents being forced into the role of a weaker sibling who must always protect the stronger one, he ultimately discovers that his feelings of brotherhood are real. He also considers the AI constructs Bit and Boot, who are earlier generations than himself, as his juniors.
Haru's development culminates in his duel against Blue Maiden. Through this fight and his conversations with Bohman beforehand, he confronts his own feelings of worthlessness and anger. He admits that he does not know what being a brother means and feels that he has only ever been used. However, his duel allows him to act on his own terms for the first time, and his loss leads to a moment of clarity where he finally understands the genuine care he has for Bohman. He is ultimately erased after his defeat, meeting his end with a degree of acceptance.
As a duelist, Haru is highly skilled, notably being the one who taught Bohman how to fight. He uses a High Drive deck, also known as Hydradrive, which focuses on Link Summoning and utilizes monsters of various attributes. His ace monster is Twin High Drive Knight. In Speed Duels, he employs a unique Skill called Marker's Portal, which allows him to activate the powerful Link Spell Judgment Arrows directly from his deck.
