Description
Lykos is a main character in the series Children of the Whales. She is a fourteen-year-old girl who originally served as an emotionless soldier of the Allied Empire, a role enforced by the influence of a Nous that suppressed her feelings. After being discovered by the inhabitants of the Mud Whale, she defects from the Empire and dedicates herself to protecting her new companions. Her background is rooted in a harsh upbringing: at seven years old, her parents enrolled her in a military academy, and just before the start of the story, she was the sole survivor of an attack on her ship by forces hostile to the Empire. This event left her alone and conditioned to operate without emotion.

Initially, Lykos appears cold, distant, and completely devoid of visible feelings, a direct result of her training as an apátheia soldier. She is naturally introverted and deeply self-reliant, shaped by years of survival and combat. As the effects of the Nous wear off over time on the Mud Whale, she begins to gradually express a wider range of emotions, including grief, joy, and a growing sense of compassion. Her core motivation shifts from mere survival to a desire to protect the people who showed her kindness, particularly Chakuro. She rejects the ideology of the Empire and chooses to fight for the Mud Whale community, seeking a sense of belonging she never had.

In the story, Lykos serves as a bridge between the outside world and the isolated society of the Mud Whale. Her arrival sparks the central conflict with the Allied Empire, and she becomes a key defender of the island during invasions. Her role evolves from a detached weapon into a dedicated protector and an active participant in the struggle for the Mud Whale's survival. Key relationships define her development. Chakuro is the first resident she meets, and his emotional openness and kindness help her reconnect with her own feelings; she develops a strong desire to protect him. Sami is the one who gives Lykos her name, and Sami's death deeply affects her, showing clear signs of grief. Her relationship with her older brother, Orca, is distant and strained, as he views her as a test subject after her time on the Mud Whale and represents the imperial life she left behind. Liontari grew up in the same city as her, but she is aware of his violent and unstable nature. Masoh informally adopts her along with other children, helping her feel a sense of community.

Lykos possesses high-level combat skills and extensive knowledge of the world beyond the sand sea, both acquired from her military training. She is a skilled fighter, capable of holding her own against trained soldiers. Her most notable ability is her gradual emotional awakening, which allows her to form genuine bonds and fight with personal conviction rather than cold obedience. This transformation from a hollow soldier to a compassionate defender is the core of her character development. She is named after the Nous of her former ship, a name derived from the Greek word for wolf.
