OVA
Description
Okō is a supporting character in the anime Hōzuki no Reitetsu, where she appears in both seasons and in the OVAs. She is a two-horned female oni who works as a prison guard in the Japanese underworld and holds the post of chief assistant of Shuju Hell, the hell where the dead who indulged in lustful pleasures are punished. In practice she acts as the site supervisor of Shuju Hell, keeping order among its rough workforce through her authority and composed manner. She is also entrusted with managing the underworld's weapon storehouse.

Her background ties her closely to the story's main circle: she is an old friend of Hōzuki, having known him since the age of the gods. She grew up alongside him in the era when the underworld was still called Yomi, and she studied together with him and their mutual friends Gazu and Yomogi in their youth. She was originally hired into the section that tempts the deceased, and her strong results there drew Hōzuki's attention, leading to an unusually rapid promotion to chief assistant as the number of female guards grew. By the end of the animated story she remains in her post, respected as one of the central female figures of the hell bureaucracy.

Her appearance is distinctive. She wears a purple kimono with green and yellow triangular borders, a blue and black striped obiage, and slightly high pink geta. Instead of a normal sash, she wraps two live female pink snakes around her waist as her obi and controls them with ease.

In personality, she is elegant, gentle, and calm, with a refined manner and a mild absent-minded streak. She is intelligent and thoroughly capable in her work. Her strongest defining trait is a deep and somewhat obsessive love of snakes; she keeps and raises many of them, trains them, and is particularly devoted to the large female snakes she wears as a sash. She is also described as the type of woman who is not disliked by other women, an unusual trait within the setting.

Her motivations are portrayed mainly through her professional pride and her loyalty to the people close to her. She carries out her duties with care, looks after younger colleagues, and devotes herself to her snakes with genuine affection.

Her most important relationship is with Hōzuki, her childhood friend from the age of the gods. The two share a long history and deep trust, yet she addresses him as Hōzuki-sama and respects the formal superior-subordinate boundary between them. Together with Gazu and Yomogi, the four form an old group of friends, and she often serves as the one who gently reins in the more reckless behavior of the others. Among the younger prison guards, Karauri is hopelessly infatuated with her and hopes to be assigned to Shuju Hell because of her; she either does not notice his feelings or calmly brushes them aside, treating him warmly as a beloved junior. She also conceived and founded the all-female torture team known as the Torture Squadron Do-Sukebe Madams.

The character does not undergo major transformation over the course of the story. Her development is conveyed through the steady building of her reputation as a capable administrator, a dependable senior, and a devoted keeper of snakes, with her close yet professional connection to Hōzuki remaining constant throughout the series. Her notable abilities include commanding the snakes she keeps, strong organizational and managerial skill, and the physical resilience and strength common to oni.
