Description
Hakutaku is a supporting character in Hozuki no Reitetsu, known primarily for being the chief rival of the protagonist, Hozuki. His character is a unique blend of divine wisdom and deeply flawed personal conduct, creating a source of consistent comedy and conflict.

In terms of background, Hakutaku is a divine beast of good luck and vast knowledge, originating from ancient Chinese mythology. He does not reside in the Japanese underworld but lives in the celestial paradise of Shangri-La, a stark contrast to the bureaucratic and often grim setting of hell. In this peaceful realm, he runs a traditional Chinese herbal medicine pharmacy named Gokuraku Mangetsu, where he puts his immense wisdom to practical use.

Hakutaku’s personality is defined by a sharp contradiction. On one hand, he is an omniscient scholar and an exceptionally skilled healer, making him a brilliant pharmacist and teacher. He uses his expertise to instruct others, including the famous hero Momotarou and a group of rabbits who assist him in his shop. On the other hand, he is an incorrigible and philandering womanizer. This flaw is his primary driving force outside of work, as he constantly flirts with and pursues women. His charm often works initially, but his compulsive cheating habits are inevitably discovered, leading to him being dumped and physically beaten by his aggrieved partners. This pattern of romantic failure is a recurring gag.

His role in the story is largely defined by his relationship with Hozuki. The two are bitter, sworn rivals who share a mutual and intense dislike for one another. A persistent visual and comedic gag is that Hakutaku bears a striking resemblance to Hozuki, a fact that Hozuki finds deeply infuriating and will react to with immediate, restrained violence against whatever object is nearest. Hakutaku, for his part, loathes Hozuki's guts, and their interactions almost invariably devolve into bickering, insults, or threats. Despite this animosity, they are forced to interact on occasion due to their respective positions in the supernatural world.

Beyond his rivalry with Hozuki, Hakutaku has other important relationships. He serves as the boss and teacher to Momotarou, the legendary peach boy, who works as his assistant after being sent to Shangri-La. Under Hakutaku’s tutelage, Momotarou undergoes a positive character development, mellowing from a loud and obnoxious troublemaker into a more tolerable and diligent worker. Hakutaku is also consistently kind and instructive to the rabbits who work in his pharmacy, highlighting the stark difference between his professional, nurturing side and his chaotic personal life.

His notable abilities stem from his nature as a sacred beast. He possesses boundless knowledge and is a master of herbal medicine, a skill he uses both professionally for healing and as the central theme of his character. A recurring comedic gag involves his complete inability to draw, which contrasts sharply with his otherwise vast intelligence. His primary role in the narrative is as a foil to Hozuki: where Hozuki is a stern, hyper-competent workaholic, Hakutaku is a lecherous, often-inebriated, but still powerful figure of wisdom. His antics and romantic pursuits frequently land him in trouble, making him a frequent target of physical comedy and a Butt-Monkey who endures constant punishment for his misdeeds.
