Description
Devil is a notable character from the 2016 Japanese animated film Rudolf the Black Cat, serving as the primary antagonist before undergoing a significant transformation. He is depicted as a large, intimidating English bulldog whose fearsome reputation precedes him throughout the Tokyo neighborhood where the story takes place. The local cats refer to his fenced yard as Hell, and Devil himself is regarded as a terrifying bully who poses a serious threat to any stray who ventures too close.

Devil has a deep and complex history with Gottalot, the gruff but benevolent stray cat who becomes the protagonist Rudolf's mentor. In the past, Devil and Gottalot were neighbors who shared a friendly relationship, even sharing food with one another. This peaceful coexistence came to an end when Gottalot's owner abandoned him, forcing him to live as a stray. Following this event, Devils personality turned nasty, and he specifically targeted Gottalot, taunting him for being abandoned and acting as a bitter rival. This history suggests that Devils aggression stems from a place of envy, as he secretly resents Gottalot for the freedom of the stray life while Devil himself is confined to his owners backyard.

Throughout much of the film, Devil fulfills the role of a genuine menace. He violently chases smaller cats, and in one particularly severe incident, he attacks a defenseless kitten, leaving the character almost fatally injured. He confronts Gottalot directly in a dog fight that places the larger cat in serious danger. Despite his frightening appearance, characterized by sharp fangs and a drooling maw, Devils motivations are not purely evil. His aggression is largely an expression of loneliness and jealousy towards the camaraderie and freedom he observes in the stray cats.

The turning point for Devils character comes through his interactions with Rudolf. The courageous little kitten does not flee from Devil but instead confronts him, leading to a fight. During this confrontation, Devil is rescued by the cats from a dangerous fall into a garden pond. This act of compassion causes him to admit his envy of their friendship and his own sense of isolation. Realizing that he wants to be part of a community rather than feared by it, Devil reforms his behavior. He reconciles with Gottalot, restoring their old friendship, and becomes an ally to the group of strays, ultimately forging a new kind of family with them.

In terms of abilities, Devils primary asset is his sheer physical power. As a large bulldog, he possesses immense strength, speed, and intimidating sharp teeth, which he uses to chase and overpower both cats and other animals. He does not possess any supernatural skills, but his physical presence alone is enough to instill fear in almost every cat in the neighborhood, making him the most formidable non-human threat in the urban setting. His character arc demonstrates that his bark and bite, while dangerous, were ultimately a defense mechanism born of loneliness rather than pure malice.
